Police could not establish that an offense had been committed, nor that there was any intention to, and the case was closed without any charges being made.

A witch hunt on the man followed in the somewhat "troubled" neighbourhood where he lived near Copenhagen. Smearings on his door, threatening letters, bricks thrown through his windows - to the point where he would sometimes sleep at his mother's or at his workplace where he'd been a janitor for 25 years, for fear of returning to his apartment.

As mentioned, the man was mildly retarded, and so was an even easier prey for those deranged people who were determined to set an example, whether there was any substance to the allegation or not.

So he was stabbed 20 times and beaten with furniture, and one of the killers said "Now you won't be doing it again, Jørgen".

Two days ago, the killers were sentenced to 16 years (maximum, short of a "life" sentence here) and 14 years imprisonment respectively.

Chaos accompanied the sentencing. Friends of the killers cried out in court and had to be escorted away. Some spoke to the press and said that society was to blame for the killing, since "the police did nothing". One person said that while killing him probably was not the right thing, "he was a dirty flasher, afterall.."

People need to get a sense of proportion and stop acting like animals as soon as the word "sex offender" is uttered. They need to learn how to distinguish between real and imagined offenses, and to assess the real amount of damage the bulk of these cases do to people compared to other forms of criminal activity.

Now that it's been put forward several times on this thread, I feel it needs to be said that having children of one's own is not a prerequisite to forming a valid opinion on the publicizing of so-called sex offender information. Or, for that matter, on the general hysteria surrounding allegations of sexual offenses that we're witnessing today.

What a ridiculous position. It's like saying only women can have an informed opinion on abortion, or that only dog owners should let themselves be heard on the subject of dog fleas. Baloney!

Besides, sexual offenses have been known, on occasion, to involve victims who have made the transformation from childhood to adulthood..

Spiff, the conviction date is listed. In the four nearest to my home, 3 were in 1999, one was in 2000. The type of conviction is listed, but that appears somewhat flawed (as I noted in my earlier post).

If someone needs a site like this to feel their children are safer I would say they have done a poor job of teaching their children in the first place.

As has been pointed out, sex offenders are virtually everywhere. Are you going to study this site for hours a day and test your kids on facial recognition of all pervs within driving distance? If there are no listings for local pervs (unlikely) are your children now safe?

Seems to me a parenting strategy should be aimed at protecting your children from all potential threats, not just those listed on some website.

Aren't most child molestations done by relatives or figures of authority? Wouldn't it be better to just know who your child associates with? Yeah, there might be a bunch of creeps in the area, but to just grab some kid of the street would be pretty obvious.

BTW, most of the offenders just work where I live. The one closest to me was convicted in 1994 and recieved 3 years suspended and 1 year of probation - which means he's paid his dues and I'm not sure how this will help anyone.
