Take the 'War on Drugs' for instance. The truth is that just about any political force in the third world somehow gets its money from drugs. Thus when people have been intoxicated with a hundred years of anti-drugs propaganda, it's super easy for a major power like America to justify all sort of nasty things with a such a convenient pretext. Just say that X militia is growing drugs, and then give helicopters to whatever authoritarian puppet to 'seek and destroy' plantations.

What I'm blaming here is this general tendency to rule out structural solutions to social problems with an appeal to personal morality (what I call 'social hygiene').

OMG I checked the first american city coming to my mind (Tampa) that scared the hell out of me. The whole city is covered by red dots (sexual abuse on minors)
I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.

I will never understand this disproportionate outrage against "sex offenders" - and the incredible witch hunt that often ensues. Apart from "sex offender" being among the broadest of terms out there - those people are criminals, as are thieves, robbers, frauds, narcotics dealers, violent offenders, murderers.

Yet we don't see people get nearly as riled up against those other types - let alone set up death squads (or wanting to do so at the bottom of their souls) to get them.

We just had a case here in which a slightly retarded man in his 40's with no criminal record was viciously stabbed to death as he was sleeping in his apartment one Sunday morning.

Two men decided to kill him because the year before, two 11 year old girls had accused him of sexual harrassment. They were playing in the grass in front of the man's apartment, when he appeared on the balcony, dressed in his underpants, and "touched himself". The girls told police they'd seen him for only 5 seconds, and that he touched himself without removing his underwear. Police could not establish that an offense had been committed, nor that there was any intention to, and the case was closed without any charges being made.

A witch hunt on the man followed in the somewhat "troubled" neighbourhood where he lived near Copenhagen. Smearings on his door, threatening letters, bricks thrown through his windows - to the point where he would sometimes sleep at his mother's or at his workplace where he'd been a janitor for 25 years, for fear of returning to his apartment.

As mentioned, the man was mildly retarded, and so was an even easier prey for those deranged people who were determined to set an example, whether there was any substance to the allegation or not.

So he was stabbed 20 times and beaten with furniture, and one of the killers said "Now you won't be doing it again, Jørgen".

Two days ago, the killers were sentenced to 16 years (maximum, short of a "life" sentence here) and 14 years imprisonment respectively.

Chaos accompanied the sentencing. Friends of the killers cried out in court and had to be escorted away. Some spoke to the press and said that society was to blame for the killing, since "the police did nothing". One person said that while killing him probably was not the right thing, "he was a dirty flasher, afterall.."

People need to get a sense of proportion and stop acting like animals as soon as the word "sex offender" is uttered. They need to learn how to distinguish between real and imagined offenses, and to assess the real amount of damage the bulk of these cases do to people compared to other forms of criminal activity.

Well, that depends on the country - in some places it's the exact opposite. Sexual abuse is common place while simply being poor - a potential thief or vagrant - is enough to attract the attention of a death squad.

I just actually looked at Camden's map on this site.

                        There's no red dots!!!

The first guy I said is on the map, but the guy I edited in isn't. I think he might have gotten off on a technicality in court, I don't remember, but it was a big deal and one of those obvious you know he did it cases.

The person living next to you may be a convicted murderer. The person driving your bus may have sold coke to teenagers. The person picking up your garbage may have been a carjacker. Your grocer may have sold out of date foodstuff.

What's stopping us from brand marking these people as well? Those medieval types, they at least knew their stuff!

The conspiracy theorist in me suspects it's all a ploy to prevent ex-criminals from reintegrating in society, and thus "proving" certain conservative ideas about the impossibility of rehabilitation.
