I normally don't like NBC's human interest stories, but this one on Eugenio Monti, the great Italian bobsleder, is absolutely amazing! What a great sportsman . Unfortunetly I couldn't imagine anyone doing today what he did then.

In the 1964 Olympics, Monti, an 8 time World Champion, and considered best in the sport, is at 2nd to the British team in 2 man bobsled after the 1st day. The Brits notice that one of their bolts on their sled is shredded and if they don't get a replacement, they won't be able to compete. Monti tells the Brits that after his run, they can have his bolt. The Brits end up winning gold.

He also sends his team to help the Canadians, whose sled was having problems in the 4 man bobsled.

Also he was involved in helping a number of teams in their bobsleding. Spreading his knowledge to anyone who wanted it.

Also at that time, he never had a gold medal and his efforts helped prevent him from getting gold. He had to wait until the Grennoble Olympics, when he was 40 years old, until he won gold in the 2 man and 4 man events.

Even then he was ever the sportsman. In the 2 man, the Italians tied the Germans, but Italy won the outright gold because they had the fastest single time. But Monti wondered they don't give gold to both teams because they had the same time.

what a joke. YOu are supposed to give the pole to anyone if your own skier is OK. That's like the unwritten rule in cross country skiing. This isn't even special or first time. Plus Norwegians are known cheaters, they prolly had infested that pole with aids or something. I'd go and execute that loser just to be sure, he sure as hell don't deserve any praise for doing the normal thing; I'm not saying the right thing because that's special, but what he did is normal.

Quite the opposite, if he hadn't given the pole, he would be a bastard. So he isn't a bastard? YEAHEHEEAYYE!!!111
