I think the europeans are being a bit weird about this.... GM food lasts longer, I remember the movie 28 days later, after all the zombies have taken over, that the only food that can be eaten that hasn't rotted is GM food, so if there is ever a food shortage (via consistent supply lowering or even stoping) due to extreme events those with GM food will survive easier and more comfortably. My two cents.

jesus christ some people...there are ways other than genetic engineering that can increase the shelf life of foods. Radiation by gamma rays, for example, works by killing bacteria in or on food such as fruits, for example.

The EU is passing (or has passed) an immense legislation about chemicals in industry. It is called REACH. I'm not an expert, so I'm going to repeat the hearsay I got.

Basically, the point of the legislation is to extend the principe de précaution to all chemicals: the industry uses thousands and thousands of different products, and only a small minority of them have been extensively tested for their effect on humans.
As a result, REACH bans heaps and heaps of chemicals from the European industry, and from European consumer goods. However, the list of kosher products is fairly long already, considering how many thousands of products are involved. While making the list, the EU forgot to include oxygen. Air Liquide, the industry giant for liquid oxygen, has panicked a bit, and things eventually sorted out.
