it could be another breakthrough, one in lobbying, where farmers now have better lobbyists, which means more subsidies and tariffs, which of course, translates to higher total output.

Exactly. We have had the technology to feed all the world since ages, but capitalism won't let that happen. Why should this be different with GM foods?
By now they could probably allow it with little effect, since there's so much resistance to buying the stuff anyway.
No, this doesn't make sense. Consumers won't buy GM food if the KNOW which are and which aren't. But consumers don't live right next to their fields. Grocers could just trick them (specially in a country with pitifully weak supervising authorities, such as mine). And of course, when you buy processed food, like a candy bar, you don't really know what they put in it. If they have to import the GM stuff to put it into our food, it's much easier for us to control the sources. Finally, there WILL be contamination of regular crops with GM ones, so practically, allowing GM crops to grow inside your country means shoving the stuff down everybody's throat.
The english colonists imported rabbits and let them loose in Australia because they needed something to shoot at, for sport. That was a BRILLIANT idea, wasn't it?

Speaking of which, Oxygen has nearly been banned in the EU. I kid you not.

I think GM crops are a great idea (whispers this, because my uncle is an organic farmer), and seem to be a pretty large step towards ending world hunger.
Furthermore, it's unlikely that most consumers will even notice, especially in pre-prepared foods.
@Duke
Here in Canada, consumers want to pay more and buy organics foods.
I think your uncle will be able to sell his organic food even if he raise his price, people are willing to pay more for organis.
My sister live in a "rich" city. She has a small coffee-restaurant. All the food she prepare are certified organics. And she succeed to survive even if the competition is really rought. His price are higher but people are willing to pay more to have quality(she's really good cook) and to have organics food!!
Like I said just before... she live in an upper middle-class where many Quebec artist and professionnal used to live.
See ya
p.s.: My sister is €now free to meet guys and she's only 22 years old.
Pros: She is clever, fun, charming, responsible
Cons: She work 60 hours/week
Ba oui, je l'ai su deja, mais quand meme, c'est l'idee d'accepter la nourriture non-biologique qui est un faux-pas chez lui, et non pas l'avenir et sa survie economique.

[edit]When's your sister planning on visiting Yookay?
He's British, and he's nailed his colours so firmly to the organic mast that there is absolutely no way he could ever go back. He's doing quite nicely out of it too, and is considering making (British) cheese in the near future.
A nice roquefort would be better, but there isn't the market for it over here, and the French wouldn't buy it from anyone else. Still, if he's thinking of some stilton or a really strong, mouth-lacerating cheddar, then that's fine by me.
I think the europeans are being a bit weird about this.... GM food lasts longer, I remember the movie 28 days later, after all the zombies have taken over, that the only food that can be eaten that hasn't rotted is GM food, so if there is ever a food shortage (via consistent supply lowering or even stoping) due to extreme events those with GM food will survive easier and more comfortably. My two cents.
