A quibble perhaps, but in THIS thread, it seems ironic that youd miss the distinction.

Why? well in Hebrew, the original name Yaweh was taboo to speak, resulting in various euphemisms, like Adonai. Over time the euphemisms gained a sense of holiness, from their use in prayer, and it became customary not to use them except in prayer or similar contexts. This has been extended by traditional Jews to the written form (God) in other languages.

I can of course use all of these here lman chinuch - for the sake of education - a use that is arguably like prayer.

Are you interested in learning more about Jewish customs?
So even in prayer the name Yaweh was not to be used? Wasn't the original rule just that it not be used in vain? what changed? Or am I mistaken about the original rule?

And of course you didn't read why:

The United States (44th) fell more than 20 places, mainly because of the imprisonment of New York Times reporter Judith Miller and legal moves undermining the privacy of journalistic sources.

So... because the US did something that it has done in the past (requiring reporters to reveal their sources in criminal cases... which I agree is a restriction on press freedom, but this is not exactly the first time), it falls 20+ places?

The Rushdie fatwa. They threatened salman rushdie with death. He was living in the west. He has remained in hiding since - he hasnt been safe living in the West. And we accepted that. We didnt decide that was unacceptable and had to be reversed. Cause he wasnt white, wasnt from the West, was a Muslim by background.

Why should we be surprised when they do the same to Dutch filmakers and Danish cartoonists?

This is a different situation. The Rushdie fatwa was against a single person. This time, Islam is trying to hold a country (or, in retrospect, a culture) resposible.

              • Imran, yeah. I guess it's fair to say that freedom of press is pretty strict, I mean in sense of no one dares to restrict the press in many nations that a thing like that drops you so far. Small things, but I think that's a good thing, because it means we have many nations that do care about it, clearly, US also.

                  - Jyllands-Posten's editor will try to publish Holokaust cartoons simultaneously with the Iranian paper that is organizing their publication

                  - Croatia's flag burned together with Norway's and Denmark's in Sarajevo, where about 1000 people gathered to protest because of the cartoon issue. Croatia is a neighbour of Bosnia, and some papers have republished the Jyllands-Posten's cartoons.

You shall not take my name in vain. But by the 1st century CE the priests said the name during the high point of the Yom Kippur sacrifices, which was a big deal as it was not used elsewhere except in prayer. There is no documentation (that i know of) of when or how it changed. Of course from the traditionalist POV it didnt change, the original biblical injunction cries out for interpretation, and the customs of the Jews followed an oral law that was also passed down at Sinai. Froma historians POV it probably DID change, as there are numerous personal names that include part of it as an element.

That decision has been changed - they are not going to publish it simultaneously. If they publish them it will be as documentation of what an iranian newspaper has published.

to that. It would be good to see what kind of cartoons the Iranians want to come with.

yes, i think the entire world should see what the Iranians are publishing. And IIUC, the paper in Iran is govt connected, and that should be noted as well.

                          • Talking about pics. Some imams has traveled the muslim world presenting the drawings that JP published. It seems that not only the 12 JP pics was in their luggage, but also a couple of others. One where mohammed was a pedopile (?) ; one where a praying muslim was raped by a dog, and the B/W blurred one on this page :

This pic, wich also can be seen in color on same page, has absolutely nothing to with pics presented in denmark, but is some frenchie participating in a pigscream contest at the Pourcailhade festival in Trie-sur-Baise.

Wonder why the imams deemed it nessecary to bring such on their tour.
