I have spent considerable time in the Orthodox neighborhoods of Baltimore. I have also spent considerable time in the Orthodox areas of Brooklyn New York, which are more extreme than those in Baltimore. I have always seen cars and buses going through on the Sabbath. An assault on a car in such a context would have been headline grabbing. Yet ive heard of none such.

I dont know your uncle, and so cant speak to the accuracy of what he said, esp second hand.

That's another great Far Side. God is sitting in front of a computer. In the monitor, you can see a guy walking down the sidewalk and there is a piano suspended over his head by a rope. God's finger hovers over a button on the keyboard labled "SMITE."

        • Yeah well too bad he is not here answering for his inaccurate and obvioulsy anti-semite statements! I shall call him immediately next morning and demand him to publicly repent in the Baltimore Sun editorial.

By Ruben Bolling. It runs in the Weekend section of the Washington Post. It's fairly inane and irreverent to a wide range of subjects. By odd coincidence, it recently had a strip mocking the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, entitled "exciting moments in the animal world." Israel and Palestine were both played by dragonflies screaming about their ancestral rights to a stump by the Mississippi river.

Anyway, it does indeed occasionally showcase a superhero named "God-Man," who uses his omnipotence power to save the day. GM isn't so much a jerk as a chance for RB to play around with the idea of being able to do absolutely anything. The strips starring him (Him?) are usually not that interesting, with one recent exception, paraphrased below:

(God-Man is sitting down to watch some daft Sandra Bullock movie--"Two Weeks' Notice," I think. He's looking forward to it. Suddenly, the hotline rings, and he's warned of some catastrophe in a warehouse somewhere. Grumbling, he gets up to save the day. He gets to the warehouse, only to find it empty except for a zit-faced kid in a costume marked with the initials FPMM.)

GM (thought bubble): "Oh no, not this cretin again."
FPMM: "Haha, you fell into my trap! It is I, your arch-enemy, Freshman Philosophy-Major Man!"
GM (thought bubble): "'Arch-enemy?' Oh, brother..."
FPMM: "I've finally got you now, God-Man! I realized that you can't make 1+1=3! That proves you're not omnipotent!"
GM (snapping fingers): "Of course I can, you ninny."
            FPMM: "Huh?"
GM (turning away as universe rearranges itself behind him): "It's just slightly different."

(As GM flies back to his lair with the universe still changing shape behind him, he remarks, "Oh, that Sandra Bullock is so CUTE! I can't wait!")

              leman chinuch, Az, leman chinuch.

Ive been over this one lately.

POTM is part of a choral group at our shul. We recently visited our frummie relations in brooklyn. One runs an inhome childcare facility. Now naturaly POTM wanted to help, and so sang some of her choral works to the crying babies. And of course she neglected to change Adonai to adoshem, as the frummies do. AFAICT the frum aunt didnt pick up on it (its amazing what you miss in a room full of crying babies).

So when we got back to sillymasortiJew land, we mentioned this to the Chazzan - How does she(!) halachacly justify teaching them to sing Adonai not adoshem, etc? Answer - Leman Chinuch! Wouldnt really apply to Yaweh of course, but then im a bit of a heretic

Ive seen some GM ones where G-d is definitely a jerk.

                          • re smoting

                            Sir Greenbaum's Madrigal
                            (Alan Sherman)

                            In Sherwood Forest
                            There dwelt a knight
                            Who was known
                            As the righteous Sir Greenbaum

                            And many dragons
                            Had felt the might
                            Of the smite
                            Of the righteous Sir Greenbaum

I chanced upon him one morn
When he'd recently rescued a maiden fair
"Why, why art thou so forlorn
Sir Greenbaum, is thy heart heavy laden?"

                            Said he, "Forsooth
                            'Tis a sorry plight
                            That engendered my attitude bluish"
Said he, "I don't wanna be a knight
That's no job for a boy who is Jewish"

All day with the mighty sword
And the mighty steed and the mighty lance
All day with that heavy shield
And a pair of aluminum pants

All day with the slaying and slewing
And smiting and smoting like Robin Hood
Oh, wouldst I could kick the habit
And give up smoting for good

And so he said to the other knights,
"You may have my possessions and my goods
For I am moving to Shaker Heights
Where I've got some connections in dry goods"

                            Farewell to the dragon's paw
And the other swashbuckling games and sports
I'll work for my father in law
When I marry Miss Guinevere Schwartz"

Who are you mocking now, ignorant secularists (ploni chaloni?) ?

The O recognize us as Jews of course. They dont recognize our rabbis as rabbis, our synagogues as synagogues, or what we do and say as Judaism. But we are jews alright the same as you ploni chalonis. Well a tad worse in fact, since at least YOU know that youre NOT practicing Judaism. (now of course those who are converted by our notrabbis are not jews, cause a notrabbi cant convert - but you should know that, since govts occasionally fall about that over there) Nice to see though that the military rabbis over there have done a fine job of accelerating the pace of conversions of Ex-FSU nonJews.
