    • It's not really hypocracy. First of all, it's not the same editor.

        • yeah, but by private magazine. You give a damn about private entities? It's not the government that's doing it.

          • Some people have been defending them (Jyllands-Posten) as some angels who did a "whoops" thing and were blisfully unaware that it might offend someone. All I'm saying is that they were fully aware of what they are doing, and that freedom of speech is not the only thing they care about since they obviously care not to insult some religions (well, if the link that says so is correct).

I still think that they had the right to publish it, and that the reaction is wholly inappropriate.

            • So you found it bad taste. And?

Many people, many people who are not muslim found it bad taste too. It's a non-issue.

                • The newspaper apologised didn't it? What more do they want? What more could the newspaper give them?

Could the Danish government, instead of apologising, offer the possibility of allowing a lawsuit for damages? I don't know who would take the position of plaintiff.

                      • Lebanese Danish Embassy Burned
Demonstrators in Lebanon have set the Danish embassy in Beirut alight in protest at the publication of cartoons satirising the Muslim prophet Mohammed.

                        A protester in Beirut
Police say 18 people have been injured in Beirut

Police in the Lebanese capital shot tear gas and fired their weapons into the air in an attempt to halt the violence, but were unable to prevent the crowds surging into the building housing the embassy.

Similar protests in Syria yesterday saw the Danish and Norwegian embassies torched. Muslims in London also took to the streets to protest at the publication of the caricatures.

The controversial cartoons, which first appeared in a Danish newspaper, have caused outrage across the Muslim community because Islamic tradition bars any depiction of the prophet to prevent idolatry.

In Beirut this morning, thousands of protesters broke through security barriers, causing casualties and damage of public property.

They burnt Danish flags and chanted: "There is no god but God and Mohammad is the messenger of God!"

Security officials said at least 18 people were injured, including policemen, fire fighters and protesters. Witnesses saw at least 10 people taken away by ambulance.

In Britain, the Conservative Party called on the police to arrest militant Muslims who threatened Westerners with violence during protests in London.

A representative of Hizb-ut-Tahrir, a Muslim group which could be banned under new anti-terror laws, condemned the violent placards displayed during the demonstrations.

"We condemn those [placards], those are not acceptable. Many Muslim groups have condemned the Friday protests and the images that were used then," Taji Mustafa said.

"What we say to Muslims is that we must not at this time stoop to the level of those who want to resort to insulting the prophet of Islam as a terrorist. We should engage in peaceful, responsible protest."
This is it, this has to be the stupidest thing ever. Denmark please reveal your secret nuke stockpile and blow the hell out of the next country that burns a flag.

                            • VetLegion, ahh bad karma.. but you know, I wouldn't have made those pictures. I do personally respect other peoples beliefs, I might not agree with it but it's their thing. I don't want to trash those people because they identify with their bleiefs so much that trashing that belief, they take it personally, and I wouldn' t want to trash a person for their beliefs, by default.

But so what, that is personal preference. I choose not to, others choose to do something else. It is vital that they can, and when talking about press, that we don't try to pressure them into self-censorship. Free press is the only way to keep everyone alert, or how do you figure rogue leaders can keep the masses tight and submitted? Free press is because we have the right to know about the truth, the press might not always give it to us, but the rules allow it to happen and those rules shouldn't be diminished. It leads to nothing good.

laurentius, don't know, I'm amazed that they haven't sent soldiers to embassies though, you know, to protect them.

We've had good relationships with scandinavian powers early days. Some our princesses married Swedish and Danish kings.

Don't worry, haven't been there. I've been playing colonisation to 5am, and so i woke up too late to attend lessons. Well, I could attend the second one, but didn't feel like it. My friends have seen it, though and tell the fence is destroyed and the ground floor burned and the cars damaged.
