  • And now the German news agency dpa quotes security sources and witnesses for saying the 2 people kidnapped are a Palestinian man with Polish citizenship and his Polish-born wife. They have not been released at this time.

    • I must say I have a hard time imagining any Danes going to Gaza or the West Bank for a long time to come, save for a select few diplomats under heavy security escort. The small Danish diplomatic representation in Ramallah remains staffed, but was closed for the day on Friday due to the hostile situation there.

On the bright side (!), this situation could turn out to be a much needed eye-opener for Europeans as to the real state of affairs vis a vis the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Have you never heard of Ann Coulter? What about G. Gordon Liddy, who devoted many episodes of his popular radio show to instructing people how to kill Federal agents (which he once was himself) because he disliked what the government was doing?

Or any of the other right wing nutjobs who go in for that kind of stuff.

I'm not in any way saying that the calls for the death of the cartoonists are appropriate. On the other hand, the cartoons weren't appropriate either. Part of being rational is that I don't have to agree with either side.

So now Islamic law is international law?

If only it were. Ken Lay would be missing a hand, and Clinton would have been stoned to death.

              • Why all this worry about Denmark anyway? Apart from loudmouthed goalkeepers, pastry and pig farms, there doesn't seem to be much to the place apart from the mermaid statue in Copenhagen.

                • Damn it! The Jyllands Posten link has been taken down in a show of respect to those lost in the ferry disaster. Good for them, but I want a link to the cartoon of the artist looking over his shoulder while drawing Mohammed. Anybody have one?

                  Edit: Never mind. Found one.

                  • Not that I'm too bothered by it myself, but for the sake of the rather serious issue before us, could we abstain from trolling? Agathon?

I would suspect Ming is keeping a watchful eye on this thread, so consider this to be sort of a PSA.

With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

Jyllands-Posten reports that the Damascus embassy was raided and set on fire, following a demonstration of several thousand people against the paper's Muhammed cartoons.

According to the news agency AFP's reporter at the site, protesters set the embassy, which is located on the 2nd floor of a 4-storey building, on fire.

Swedish news agency TT reports that the Swedish embassy there is also in flames.

None of the six Danish employess were in the building as it was raided.

Reportedly there had been SMS-messages circulating with rumours that Danes would gather in central Copenhagen on Saturday to publicly burn Korans, and that recipients should meet up at the embassy.

The embassies of Sweden and Chile are located in the same building.

Eyewitnesses report that the mob started by throwing stones at the building, before entering and setting it on fire.

                            • Mounting troubles in Copenhagen, where earlier today, groups of second generation immigrants clashed with far-right radicals at the city's Central Station. Police say it was "serious" and officers had to use their batons. Two people have been detained.

At noon, 150 Muslims protested the Muhammed cartoons in Copenhagen central Town Hall Square, while 3 far-right radicals with Danish flags were hastily escorted out by the police.

Several of the protesters have proceeded by train to the nearby town of Hillerød where a group called "Dansk Front" ("Danish Front") - presumably a right wing radical group, there's no mention of it, and it's unknown by me - will hold a protest against "Muslim aggression". A counter-protest against this group tonight has been announced.

                              ---

People should go home and watch some handball on TV instead. (Denmark plays Spain in the Euro Chmps. semi-final right about now.)

                              • The destroyed embassy in Damascus.

The Danish embassy was located on the 2nd floor. (For Danes: på første sal).

                                This is utter madness.
