It's worth noting that the 12 satirical cartoons were published in September 2005. After some initial protests from Muslims here in Denmark, and some positive-spirited dialogue between Muslims and the newspaper, the matter was largely forgotten.

Until, that is, in late December, a delegation of Danish Imams went on a tour of several Middle East countries to alert governments to the matter - in that process grossly misrepresenting all the facts of the case, the motivation of the newspaper, the politics of the government, etc. They tried their very best painting a picture of a society generally filled with hatred against Muslims. And apparently it worked.

THAT'S when it all escalated, especially after Saudi Arabia recalled their ambassador for consultations, 4 months after the drawings were printed, but curiosly only 2 weeks after the much criticized security for pilgrims there, which resulted in mass stampedes causing hundreds of people to die.

And now they want to bring it before the U.N.

The UN won't tell them to sod off though they should. They will hound this for the same reason they continually verbally attack Israel but ignore the dozens of Islamic terror organizations. Namely, because there are so many muslim members and because it is so much more fun to waste time of trash like this then to actually get down to dealing with human rights abuses in those same muslim countries or a million other things.

No doubt the owners of several Indonesian porn websites are upset by the new competition.

I think it's also relevant to know why the paper decided to post these cartoons to begin with.

There'd been some debate in Denmark about the allegedly widespread self-censoring among artists, writers and academics when Islam was concerned. A recently published educational book on the history of Islam had only managed to contract illustrators if they were guaranteed full anonymity, for fear of retribution from fundamentalist Muslims here in Denmark.

A professor who had on two occasions read passages from the Koran during a lecture at the university, was followed when leaving another lecture a couple of days later in a taxi cab, stormed at a red light, dragged from the cab and beaten and kicked severely for "defaming the Holy Book", since only Muslims are allowed to read it out loud.

Long story short, Jyllands-Posten decided to test the boundaries of self-censorship among cartoonists, by inviting 45 of the profession's most wellknown people to do a drawing of Muhammed to be published in the paper. Only 12 took the invitation.

Of 45 people invited, only 12 felt that they were up to it.

The 12 artists' contribution is what this grand dispute is all about. All of the 12 have received personal threats in the aftermath, a number of them having been under continuous police protection, and all have been advised by the Police Intelligence Agency to keep a very low public profile.

So much for trying to focus on self-censorship. So much for attempting to exercise free speech in a country where, increasingly, "the persecuted" become the persecutors.

                  from az's article

He added that it would not contain nude photography or graphic sexual content. "Any magazine we launch in Indonesia would be focused on many of the other things Playboy is well known for: high-quality editorial, including interviews and feature stories written by renowned local writers and journalists."

i have to say, the indonesian playboy sounds a bit rubbish

The Swedish Foreign Ministry is encouraging all Swedes to leave the West Bank and Gazah after the Al-Aqsa Brigades have issued pamphlets giving all Swedes and Danes 48h to leave the place, backed up by unprecisized threats. They also encourage Palestinians to boycott all Swedish and Danish products (prompting the question, what the hell do we export to there?).

The alleged crime is that Swedes and Danes have, with the consent of their governments, put up posters mocking the prophet Muhammad.

Meanwhile, IJ is threatening attacks against Swedes, Danes, and Norwegians.

We can't let fundamentalists dictate our society from afar, I expect representatives of muslims within our countries to take a stance against all violent actions caused by this. Fair enough if they want to boycott.

If the candy were shaped like a burning cross or a black man made of regular chocolate being dragged behind a truck made of white chocolate I could understand the outrage and would share it. - Drosedars

Here's a link to the 12 cartoons, with most of them having the accompanying text (if any) translated into English.

The two that have been most widely circulated and referenced are # 4 & 11.

                              #4 is brilliant IMO.
