True . But the 6800 is twice the price of the 6600 , at least in India
Really? A 6800GS will cost perhaps £120, though add more for the XFX model which looks awesome. A 6600GT on which you could hope to play F.E.A.R will set you back around £100 to £110.

You could pick up a nice 7800GT for just under £200 too . Scan.co.uk has a pretty good selection .

As someone stuck with an AGP board (Athlon 64 3200+), I'm pleased to see the 7800GS come out as an AGP board.

Will be upgrading shortly from my Radeon 9800 Pro.

I'd have expected you to be running pci-x, any reason?

Built my computer in August 2003. Had top of the line stuff at the time, PCI Express didn't exist yet.

Fair play. PCI-E isn't really a necessity at the moment, though that'll probably change in the next few months, but then, from your point of view, I'd imagine a completely new system with Socket 940 M2 would be on the cards?

For me, if I don't buy a Mac, it'd be a Core Duo based system regardless, will likely buy when the 64 bit versions come out just before Vista.

I'm waiting for something similar -- definitely after Vista comes out, maybe a quad core Athlon 64.

In September I'm going to be moving, buying a condo, furnishing said condo, etc. so it may have to wait til 2007.

That must be a real ***** to code for

Personally I think this will be the year that Intel pwns AMD. As far as I'm aware, AMD are just riding off the back of their excellent Athlon 64 design. Things will get interesting when Intels new chips start to bite.

                    • It depends on the task, some of them are trivial to scale to higher threads (such as encoding). Game developers are starting to get more used to it.

They need 6 threads for optimal performance on the Xbox 360, and 9 for optimal performance on the PlayStation 3. On the PC front, they're moving in the same direction...but slower.

Intel could very well pwn AMD. It'll be a decision I make at the time. Intel vs AMD, Nvidia vs ATI...I have no loyalties, give me the best product.

                      • Likewise, except for nVidia vs ATI.... ATI's drivers scare me

                        • I've yet to have trouble with either Nvidia or ATI drivers.

                          I went STB ViRGE -> Voodoo2 -> TNT2 Ultra -> GeForce 3 -> Radeon 9800 Pro, and it looks like I'm about to go GeForce 7800GS.

I actually prefer ATI's regularly scheduled, monthly driver updates to Nvidia's irregular updates.

                          • I bought a Radeon 9550 a while back and I had to remove it, since it made by PC crash all the time. I contacted ATI and tried everything they suggested. The Radeon is in its box as we speak. 200 $ down the toilet. I should probably sell it...

                            • Why didn't you get it swapped under warranty?

When one of my motherboard's capacitor blew and fried my video card and CPU, the video card constantly crashed.

ATI sent me a new card no questions asked. It wasn't even their fault.

                              • IRC, you have between 10 to 15 days to return a product at Futureshop. I waited too long before I decided it isn't worth the trouble trying to make it work. After I put it back in its box, I basically forgot about it. Anyway, there's probably nothing wrong with the Radeon itself, it just doesn't like my system, with its integrated graphics.

Otoh, maybe there's something wrong with it. AFAIK, its still under warranty, right? Its 3 years, IRC.
