You should at least put the photo of someone who, presumably, looks like Imran... Imran may or may not have a moustache.

No, it's still due out before year's end.

Please stop spamming my thread, Agathon. You want to do your Mac ****, take it outside.

Well, you'd be wrong as usual.

Advanced Micro Devices is reported to be preparing three new types of sockets for central processing units in 2006. Depending on the target market, AMD will have different processor form-factors for laptops, desktops and servers starting from mid-2006, if the reports are correct.

For desktop and uniprocessor workstations AMD supposedly readies the so-called Socket M2, which will have 940-pins, but will not be compatible with existing Socket 940 infrastructure. DigiTimes web-site claims that the Socket M2 will be used for AMD Sempron, AMD Athlon 64, AMD Athlon 64 FX and AMD Opteron 100-series processors and will substitute existing Socket 754, Socket 939 and Socket 940 desktop and workstation infrastructure. For AMD Opteron processors for 2P and MP servers AMD reportedly prepares a 1207-pin Socket F that will be utilized instead of Socket 940. For mobile computers AMD is expected to offer Socket S1 with 638-pins, which will replace existing Socket 754 for laptops.
                Socket M2 is coming in Q2 2006.

Given that you had no information to the contrary, why do you feel the need to correct people? It's frustrating how consistently wrong you can be on so many topics, and then have you constantly spew rhetoric.

                M2 supports DDR2, for what it's worth.

I can sympathize. It's a bloody fulltime job.

I'd like to see the new AMD's come out sooner in Q2 than later... then the older ones will drop in price .

This is funny on so many levels, coming from somebody who claims COCOMO I/II has any relevant bearing on critical software. In fact, you have to yet demostrate you have any knowledge wrt critical software.

I am not surprised in the least that you substitute hearsay for solid information:

                          Absolutely not.

Save the money and upgrade the processor in a year if you to spend the anyway.

Lots of people have been proposing systems that are very processor heavy

Mainly because grafic cards are becoming to fast for the processor to keep up.

No trub. Bare in mind your upgrade path is limited with todays systems as AMD is bringing

To be honest, each time I've upgraded the processor, I upgraded the MB as well, the whole upgrade thing never really works I think.

Lots of people have been proposing systems that are very processor heavy and not much in the way of graphics. The 6600 was a good chip but it's time has passed. I have a 6600 GT, overclocked to 500Mhz on the core and 1100Ghz (effective) on the memory, and only this is good enough to keep it competitive with later chips.

A decent mid-range card now is the 6800GS, it's dated but it'll cope with most titles out now, and Vista as well if it must. A better bet would be the 7800GT whose price is rapidly falling because of competition with ATI.

RAM... for what you want, 1Gb minimum, 2Gb would be nice, but make sure it's paired overclockers RAM so the timings wont put excessive load on the processor. To be honest, I'd buy a decent pair of 512Mb modules, since 2Gb isn't necessary just yet. It'll be standard in 6 months, but I'd suggest spending the money on a better graphics card and hard disk.

As for the processor, the Athlon X2 3800 is a decent chip, more than good enough for what you want to do with it. Most games these days aren't CPU bound.

I know this is more geared towards those who build their own machines, but you wont go far wrong if you look for this kinda stuff in ready-made machines.

True . But the 6800 is twice the price of the 6600 , at least in India .
