Kinda irrelevant, but ever read Johnson & Johnson's credo? It's a ****ing poem:

    Our Credo

We believe our first responsibility is to the doctors, nurses and patients,
to mothers and fathers and all others who use our products and services.
In meeting their needs everything we do must be of high quality.
We must constantly strive to reduce our costs
in order to maintain reasonable prices.
Customers' orders must be serviced promptly and accurately.
Our suppliers and distributors must have an opportunity
    to make a fair profit.

We are responsible to our employees,
the men and women who work with us throughout the world.
Everyone must be considered as an individual.
We must respect their dignity and recognize their merit.
They must have a sense of security in their jobs.
Compensation must be fair and adequate,
and working conditions clean, orderly and safe.
We must be mindful of ways to help our employees fulfill
    their family responsibilities.
Employees must feel free to make suggestions and complaints.
There must be equal opportunity for employment, development
    and advancement for those qualified.
    We must provide competent management,
and their actions must be just and ethical.

We are responsible to the communities in which we live and work
and to the world community as well.
We must be good citizens – support good works and charities
and bear our fair share of taxes.
We must encourage civic improvements and better health and education.
We must maintain in good order
the property we are privileged to use,
protecting the environment and natural resources.

Our final responsibility is to our stockholders.
Business must make a sound profit.
We must experiment with new ideas.
Research must be carried on, innovative programs developed
    and mistakes paid for.
New equipment must be purchased, new facilities provided
    and new products launched.
Reserves must be created to provide for adverse times.
When we operate according to these principles,
the stockholders should realize a fair return.

Not a very good poem either.

Google does offer a disclaimer that some searches are blocked.

CNN today tested the system. Typing "Tiannanmen" into the US system gave over 2 million results. Typing that into the Chinese system gave about 40,000 with the disclaimer in Chinese.

You also have to note that Google does block sites in other countries according to the laws there. Germany for example, where neo-nazi and other anti-sematic sites are blocked. In the US, child porn sites are blocked.

That said, I still disagree with it.

Does anyone really believe that a corporation would choose the values of its credo over money if it had to make the decision?

Some do, some don't. The more succesful companies tend to do so. The point is that there's no "or" and that standing by the company's lofty values indirectly leads to profits. It's karma.

I understand that some funds in the USA only invest in "green" or "ethical" bonds or shares. So there may be some incentive there too for companies to "behave".

About this Google self-censorship, I don't consider it a disaster. I am of the opinion that it's completely impossible to censor things on any given search engine unless you remove ALL documents containing a word, which would be impractical as it would also eliminate daily news and lots of unrelated info.

On the example of Tianmen, censoring by keywords can only do so much. I bet that some of those 40 000 results contain information unfavorable to Chinese government. Also, does Google censor searches on Usenet too?

Finally, does Google censor stuff like "find anonymous proxy +USA" or such queries?

I think that even with limited Google search users in China get a powerful tool against their government. Censorship may be a tool against the casual person typing "Tianmen massacre" in a web caffe, but anyone with some determination and a little more time can still find what they are looking for using the same tool.

I can't test this hypothesis though, but that's what I think.

Plus, with the incredible internet savy of many Chinese users, the governments attempts to block unfavorable information will only make them more eager and skillful at obtaining and sharing it. Google's actions are rather insignificant. In fact, they may point out some things that many young Chinese never knew there was a controversy over. Even my college-aged students couldn't recognize the man in front of the tank picture. This may start having them ask some questions.

I have found that as well (and for adults, too).

Considering the image is, globally, one of the most famous photos of China from the 20th century, I'd say that's strong evidence for the surprising effectiveness of China's censorship practices.

Thanks, Plato. Here's the stuff from the other thread.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Readers of Antics of the Orient will find this "news" to be anything but that, as the Red Menace's plans were first unveiled months ago.
