Hell, I had a 3.2 through undergrad and had no trouble getting into Hopkins (maybe #10-15 grad school in the US for my field).

    Even got a minor fellowship.

I had a few things going for me:

    1) I went through a really tough program which, moreover, is well-known to be tough

    2) My standardised test scores were through the roof (GRE General & GRE Subject, though they don't care too much about the GRE general in physics depts)

    3) I had done some good work during the summertimes as a research assistant in my department

What subject are you applying to, Apoc? What school are you coming from?

What schools do you realistically think you have a chance of being accepted to?

Since when did < 60 get you more than F? Or 90 an A?

Grades for mediocrity . Unfortunately it seems that you need to know the school to really compare two different results.

Then again, some people might give you more points than other people, so, I guess grades aren't really comparable anyway. Except they might give some direction.

No, I'm taking a few classes as a back up plan while I'm trying to start my own business. Also, what can a university teach me that I can't get out of a book? I don't even go to any of my classes because the book tells me all I need for the test. I've been dropped from several classes because of attendance even though I had an A in the class. Is this to help "facilitate" my learning? Face it, universities are a joke. There's nothing they can teach that I can't learn out of a book or through real world experience.

                Yes there is.

In fact, I'm fairly certain that they teach things which you couldn't learn, period.

Well, I'm not looking at too much yet...not even in my major (actually the program is specifically for non-majors), but I was thinking of Columbia's one-year journalism masters. I go to VMI.

My room mate is studying biochem, and my two best friends graduated electrical engineering and software engineering.

Western forced the engineers to take the mandatory 'Ethics in Engineering' course and 1 other arts half-credit. Non-engineers can take any combination of courses equivalent to 1 full arts credit.

That's hardly back-breaking stuff here at Western folks...and I think that reasonable people would agree that people who are going to be making important decisions and wielding influence as a group should at least have the slightest idea of what's going on in the world and how we got here outside their own field.

"I were to hire you to work for me I wouldn't give a **** about whether or not you know about the rest of the world"

Have you had a wide experience of different companies and co-workers? In the experience of my friends and I, there are people who look extremely competant on paper but are 'hothouse plants' with such a terrible lack of basic knowledge, life skills, and social skills that they are basically non-functional outside the narrow range of their expertise.

Given the range of industries we work in, I think it's safe to assume that it's a general rule. My other family members report similar experiences. In one's Civil Engineering company, new hires have to be basically retrained on the job. Same in my other uncles' credit union and Century 21 office...like my oldest uncle said "I don't really care what you think you know...all I want to know is CAN YOU WORK WITH REAL PEOPLE." and being 'well-rounded', or exposed to people and ideas that are outside your 'comfort zone' is an important part of that.

The real world is full of people who disagree with you and ideas that you may be unfamiliar with, and so it behooves an employer to hire someone who has at least the slightest idea of the 'bigger picture'.

At my school getting a D didn't cut it. If you got a D in a required class then you had to retake it. It did however count as a General Elective. But still, getting a D was pretty much like failing.

At my school, the letter grade assignment varies depending on the class.

I've found that in my artsy options, 80+ is usually an A, while in CS world, 90+is usually an A.

Anything lower than a C- is effectively an F. Well, you can't use it for a pre-req for another class, and you're only allowed 1 D in your degree.
