      I can guarantee you that getting a 70 at McGill in an undergraduate honours physics class was a hell of a lot harder than getting an A at Hopkins in the putatively equivalent class.

      We had an 85% dropout rate in my program, yet all you had to do to stay in was maintain a B average.

      Get a 70% in every class and you could stay in. I wonder why only 3 out of 21 students entering managed to do so...

            Where's the letter E in your funny marking system?

            In here it's simply 1 (not enough) to 5 (excellent).

              The letters themselves are not important. What is important is their grade point equivalent

              A = 4.0
              B = 3.0
              C = 2.0
              D = 1.0
              F = 0.0

              Any minus after a letter takes away 0.3
              Any plus after a letter adds 0.3
              i.e. B- = 2.7
              There should be no A+ given (some places give them, but that's an example of grade inflation)

                  100 people is too big of a class? I've known courses with close to a 900 enrolled held in rooms seating 800... it was assumed that on any given day, 10% of the students would ditch.

                    In the US the most common system is:

                    A: 90 and up
                    B: 80-89
                    C: 70-79
                    D: 60-69
                    F: under 60

                    Unfortunately many lower level classes get dumbed down because proffessor preformance is checked by giving students a "how well did you like this class" questionare, and poorly preforming students will give the proffessor bad marks. A race to the bottom is also encouraged because of high tuition costs.

                      800? wow, thats a big class. the largest capacity classroom at my Uni, the big lecture hall in our new science lab seats 400, and is rarely more than half full.

                        Universities are a joke in general anyway. You spend 2 years of your life learning useless **** that you are never going to use or care about. Then they always make sure to put in some dumbass multicultural diversity bull**** requirement like african american studies. They also have every possible rule ever imaginable guaranteeing you a dropped course and loss of money at some point along the line. Universities are nothing more than a ****ing beaurocracy and everyone has become a number as they run you through. What's worse is that they have a virtual monopoly since pretty much everyone these days gets a degree. I won't even talk about the books and their little scheme of changing 1 page in the book to make it a new ****ing edition and making the cost of the book astronomical. You guys whine about corporations, how about some whining about Universities which are these days nothing more than a corporation themselves.

                          The Liberal studies requirements are there to make you a well rounded citizens, though I agree that some of the multicultrual courses are often a bit stupid and are garenteed to have Ward Churchill type loony or two.

                            A,B,C, and D are various levels of success at passing a course. Anything below 60 means a Fail, hence the F.

                              People don't go to school to become well rounded citizens, they go there so they can get a better job and make more money. I know you won't understand this though because you are a socialist and probably have no intention of actually living in the real world.

                                Employers like people with a well rounded education, thats why people with a bachlor's degree usually earn more than someone with an associates degree.
