Today, he held a meeting with a group of people in Louisville, Kentucky to discuss and answer questions from the audience on the war in Iraq and the war on terror.

He made a statement that almost compelled me to throw my remote control at my television -- he said that history has shown that democracies yield peace, which I guess would include United States.


Apparently, he doesn't know anything about our aggression against the various Amerindian cultures in the 18th and 19th centuries.

He also doesn't know anything about our aggression against Mexico in the 19th century.

He also doesn't know anything about our grab for imperial power overseas during the late 19th century through most of the 20th century.

He also isn't aware of the propping up of bloody, cruel, anti-communist dictatorships in Latin American countries during the 20th century.



Or, he does know all of this, but he cynically retorts to simplistic, soundbite rhetoric to dupe his supporters -- who are in the minority now.

democratic peace theory holds that democracies dont go to war against EACH OTHER - not that they are peaceful in general. And it certainly says nothing about internal policies against indigenous minorities, or aggressive policies other than war . It sounds like W got the sound byte version of democratic peace theory, and repeated it.

that said, the origins of the Mexican American war are just a tad more complex than you imply.

MrFun, I usually laugh about some of the frogs that comes out of his mouth, that we then bastardize further.

I don't think what he said is lack of knowledge of history. What I think he says is true. Democracy is good for peace. Democratic countries rarely do war against each other these days, and democratic (truly democratic) countries rarely have inner problems, such as civil wars these days. Modern democracies are good for its citizens when it works, like it does in many nations.

Now, democracy is vulnerable against others, so it's not uncommon for democratic nation to do war in general. To protect that said democracy. And sometimes for other reasons.

I think that comment was meant to mean democracy vs democracy, and democracy in itself, inside.

I don't think Democracy has that much of an affect of whether or not a country is going to go to war against another country.

Liberal Democracies have not been around long enough to really test this theory... and the countries that have such governments are allies for strategic reasons, and because they've been allies in the past... also there are cultural similarities...

If there was an actual Democracy in the Muslim world right now, you'd see a theocratic government voted into power. And if that country had the military might, and if Israel didn't have nukes, it would invade Israel in a TEL-AVIV MINUTE, KILL EVERY JEW, AND WIPE ISRAEL OFF THE FACE OF THE PLANET... (of course, barring a response from Israel's allies)

Countries that have gone to war in the past that have not been Democracies, have generally been countries where the populations have been in support of the wars, for various reasons. And although the governments might not have been Democracies, the leaders have had the support of the people. Even the Nazi party gained power by gaining votes by democratic process... leading to Hitler's grab for power.

Yep, that sounds about right. One of his advisors was telling him about the democratic peace theory and W forgot about the dyads part and started talking about all democracies.

Yeah, you should have held it until your partner led with the 7 of spades.

Entering the war in Iraq seemed pretty unpopular with the people in yookay, but in we went anyway. It didn't seem too democratic, but it's unlikely W will order our invasion for undemocratic principles. Democracies very rarely act according to democratic principles - it's as simple as that.
