            Never meant to imply that the lands were unihabited.

              There were very few Mexicans in the "Far North" prior to the American conquest. I can very well imagine they were outnumbered by the various Indian tirbes.

                  Yeah, good point. I recently read about colonial America that included the history of Spanish colonies.

                  Spanish population growth north of Mexico just never took off the way Enlgish population growth did on the Atlantic coast of North America. But that is not to say that there were no Spanish-descent settlers in Spanish colonies north of Mexico -- and of course, there were the various Amerindian tribes.
                  A lot of Republicans are not racist, but a lot of racists are Republican.

                      It's why the whole situation blew up as it did. Mexico invited whites from the US to settle in Texas for just about for free because they wanted someone to settle in those Northern areas since the Mexicans weren't.
