  • RIP "Intel Inside"; 1990-2006

One of the most successful image campaigns is coming to an end.

The Intel Logo is changed (the dropped "e" is no more, there is an oval swirl around the name now), the "Intel Inside" is gone, and the name "Pentium" is going out the door.

Intel is launching its new chips, both based on the Pentium M/Centrino design with considerable enhancements.

"Intel Core Solo" is the single-core version, "Intel Core Duo" is the dual-core version of the codename "Yonah" chip.

The old Logo was 37 years old. "Leap Ahead" replaces "Intel Inside".

"Centrino" branding will ramp up more, as well as the introduction of the "Viiv" branding for home theatre PCs.

Hmm.. Breaking news isn't exactly what it used to be.

I'm quite determined not to let this interfere too much with my enjoyment of life.

It's fairly big news for anyone who knows more about business than how much the girl on the corner is worth.

Oh, that's why the planet stopped rotating for a moment - haven't experienced that since the last time Prinzen rollen changed their logo.

Though, this is serious business - we have to scrap all comps with the old logo and everyone who uses a computer needs at least nine months of reeducation so they can use the computers with the new mark.

Guess that we won't hear much from Asher in the following months while he figures out the changes that this new logo has on his programming ability.

                Marketing question

What kind of impulse makes a company drop an obviously successful, longstanding campaign like "Intel Inside"? What benefits does Intel stand to gain financially from the new logo?

How much was invested in design for this? What is the projected return on investment?

Yeah, the previous logo was much better. Boo hiss.

Sarcasm ? No way. I guess that Asher is working hard at the moment to figure out what difference this major change in the computing environment has on his daily life. As Asher claims, it's a major thing that has severe impact on the whole IT community - just read his statement :

that should convince any sceptical person.

Consider Coca Cola, Chevy, MacDonald's, Bic.

When was the last time any of them changed their logo?

Logos are important, because of the way we associate ideas with images. We associate companies with logos the way we associate people with faces.

I have to wonder what made Intel desperate enough to change theirs.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

"leap ahead" is rather uninspiring. Sell.

Don't think that they are desperate in any way - just like all other companies they refresh their logo to keep it up to date. It might be part of a big advertising campaign, but rarely involves any change in the product - intel will still be intel.

Wonder if Asher has found another source of income

Exactly. At least some people here understand the significance of such a move.

In France, pretty much every big company with a recognizable logo (such as the post office, the train company, the phone network etc) has undergone a change in recent years. All new logos have a more "modern" look than the previous ones, which used to be more angular and with less subtle colours.

IMO, many changes in logos are related to giving a fresh image to something that looks old. Not necessarily desperation.
