The significance to me is that the new chips are probably not a "leap ahead" and they need a strong marketing effort to get people to dump their pentium powered comps.

It only convinces me more that you're a code monkey without a larger understanding of the industry's direction. Intel's departure in image and marketing is coupled with a change in the company's direction. And if you understood the industry, you'd realize how this is important.

This has been front-page news on a lot of tech sites.

I rather like the new logo, a stylish touch was added to the word "Intel" and it was combined with the oval from the "Intel Inside", which keeps it familiar.

"Pentium" is old now and Centrino has matured. It's a good moment to complete the shift.

Logos are important, because of the way we associate ideas with images. We associate companies with logos the way we associate people with faces.

I have to wonder what made Intel desperate enough to change theirs.

Coke, while the basic logo doesn't change, does have subtle changes all the time too.

So now everybody's either in the know or a code monkey. Narrow outlook on life through computerized goggles.
It's candy. Surely there are more important things the NAACP could be boycotting. If the candy were shaped like a burning cross or a black man made of regular chocolate being dragged behind a truck made of white chocolate I could understand the outrage and would share it. - Drosedars

What used to bug me with Intels marketing, was that after 486 they came up with "Pentium", which of course mean five-something... And then they started calling the subsequent CPU Pentium Pro, II, III, 4, etc... If you don't want to stick with sequential names, then atleast come up with something unique.

Sextium might have gotten few puns, true.

They should use the phrase "Intel - The Great Leap Forward" instead, sounds much more positive

It was very successful -- the masses wanted Intel Inside, and nothing else.

Then Intel screwed the pooch on the P4 redesign and gave AMD the break it needed.
