Yes, but I don't see your point. The A510 and 520 had DIGIC I.

The newer A610 and A620 have the DIGIC II.

My point was the image stabilizer is a feature of the DIGIC II, which means it's in the A610 and A620 but disabled to the user.

did I mention that I am backing my camera because it's kickass for taking shots of sports events?
I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.

Ahh, sorry, I misunderstood. Though are you sure you're right? I was told the IS part was actually a seperate componant, allowing the lense to move a very small amount in a set way to counter any shake. How does the DIGIC II counteract camera shake in the way the IS does?

I was under the impression that IS was digital and not mechanical. If it was mechanical, it would make sense.

I thought I had read somewhere that image stabilization was a DIGIC II feature, though.

            Excellent choice

The thing I like the most about the A520 is that it runs on regular AA-batteries. This way, you aren't stuck with propietary li-ion batteries that require a separate charger. Just chuck in a regular battery that you can also get in any shop.

              yeah

We also got my sister a package of rechargeable batteries and a charger so she's not constantly buying new batteries.

That seems to be a trend for all their cameras.

The S2 IS is the same way.

So I thought I'd ask you guys about yours - are you happy with yours?

I'm looking for something small that I can easily bring in my pocket. I used to take a lot of pictures but my old camera which I bought in 1993 (see, time for me to move on!) was too bulky so I stoped bringing it with me to parties and so on.

I don't need top of line. I'm sure 5 megapixels are good enough - I heard any more than that are really a waste of 'power' and are more suited for those in photography or digital media field. Sort of like buying an Alienware computer for only word processing, you know?

Anyway I gotta go - had only time to do a quickie posting. Will check again later and post more.

Meanwhile hope your day went spiffy! Despite some family crap, it was actually a pleasant day.
Indeed 5 megapixels and 3X optical (not digital) zoom, will do quite well. Upgrade the memory card and you are set for awhile. Don't let the camera geeks talk you into anything more.

btw - that is an Olympus Stylus - 4.0 Megapixel and 3X optical zoom. Nice thing about it is that it is waterproof, and very compact - I do a lot of hiking.

Oooh, I like the pic. The water's lovely, but a bit overexposed on the mountain. I guess it's an either/or shot.

Obligatory fave picture shot (taken with old Canon A75 - 3.2MP):

I've had a Powershot SD100 and I would recommend that line (Canon Powershot) to you from personal experience. My camera is easy to use and the pictures turn out good enough for any reason I would need them.

Check to see what size memory card is bundled with the camera. Most likely it's a pitiful amount. The only thing you should need to buy in addition to the actual camera is a large memory card (you'll be glad you got one, there's nothing more annoying than taking pics and running out of room halfway in a trip.)

Yeah, I bought my sister a larger memory card because the one that came with the Powershot A520 only held 16 pics. The one I got for her holds like 256.

                              5MPixels, 12x optical zoom.

I bought this one 6 months ago and the photos are great. The 12x zoom rocks !!! But it isn't very compact-- in fact its downright bulky compared to a lot of cameras out there

Ya I like the AAs-- I got rechargeables and I always carry a spare set of 4 regular AAs so I never get stuck-- My previous digital camera had its own battery size and it was a royal pain in the a**
