Limbo was never offical church doctrine.

I find the combination of "D&D" and "cosmology" in the same sentence extremely irritating.

Limbo - in catholicism, a place for souls who are not yet ready to enter heaven

Limbo - in Judaism - a game/dance, obligatory at any Bar/Bat Mitzvah party involving a standard issue DJ, in which two adults whod rather be drinking and chatting with their friends are recruited to hold a "limbo stick" while a bunch of 13 year olds attempt to slither under said stick without touching it, at progressively lower heights.

I would not be unhappy to have some prominent group of rabbis abolish limbo, having been one of the unfortunate adults at a recent party, and having a sore arm the next day as a result

Hey, the Pope is just responding to divine revelation; this is God™'s move. If Ssendam or Ygorl can be killed by a mere 78th level half-elf-half-dwarf paladin-ranger-barbarian with a +23 sword of Slaad-slaying, what chance have they got against God™?

cant speak for RCC, but in traditional Judaism, its Rabbis who make the rules, wherever the torah is not clear. Proof text - "Its not in heaven" IE the law is given to man, to interpret. This makes it much for flexible for dealing with changing conditions, and frees us from fundie insanity. I presume the RCC takes a simlar stance. I cant imagine why secularists are attacking the RCC using what are, quite frankly, fundie Protestant arguments. Unless its just a desire to attack any religion at any time, in any place with any arguments available. Which bespeaks an obsession thats not quite healthy.

Then you must never have played much of the game. Nearly all campaign settings, at least the ones put out by WotC, have distinct "cosmologies." What exactly is irritating about it?

Sorry, dude. Sheol and YHWH didn't make the cut. They aren't in the 1st edition Players Handbook or any version or supplement released since.

But it isn't based on YHWH or the Roman Catholic God™ anyway. Your destination is based on alignment. Orthodox Jews might go to Arcadia, or even Nirvana. An observant Jew without the stick up his arse might go to Elysium or Twin Paradises.

Without Limbo they'll have to find a replacement or split the Chaotic Neutrals between Gladsheim and Pandemonium. This might be the choice facing the stereotypical liberal Jewish free-thinkers.

But the same holds for the Roman Catholics. Their God™ isn't to be found either, and they would be split up along these lines.

Seems like the real stick-up-ass religionists would go to The Seven Heavens of Celestia - maybe Arcadia for the most annoying ones (Boy, that must be a real sh*tty plane. "We, uh, lost the last level - it became too lawful."). Elysium seems more like a Ghandi plane or something - nobody's in an organized religion, but they're all paragons of good.

By the way, what is "Gladsheim?" Limbo is bordered by Pandemonium and Ysgard, at least as of the latest editions.

But clearly where the American fundies belong is Acheron.
