If I'm reading printed material, I prefer serif fonts to sans-serifs like Ariel and Verdana. I'm not crazy about Times New Roman, but the standard alternatives all look the same to me.

I hate just about every Microshaft application I've ever come across. Word is no different. I'd rather use anything else. How is it that such a large and successful company like Microshaft can without fail produce the worst application of the bunch while at the same time put the others out of business?

I prefer Ariel, but the ACM is still using Times New Roman. Meh, what can you do?

          I hadn't thought of that -- I'll give it a shot today.

I hate MS-Word. I miss WordPerfect. I switched jobs about two years ago and had to switch to MS-Word. I even offered to buy my own copy of WP to use. No dice. I must use MS-Word for work. I miss the "reveal codes" option, which made my life much, much easier. I hate that deleting section breaks in MS-Word undoes formatting changes that I made above the section break. I hate the way margins and double-indenting in MS-Word work. I hate the "reading layout" that MS-Word uses when I open a document from email. For me, the list goes on and on. Apparently, no, there's no "stop sucking so much" option for MS-Word. I've customized mine just about as far as you can w/o tinkering with the underlying programming and, yep, MS-Word still sucks.

Name calling and sweeping generalizations from simpletons is sooooo elementary school. Grow up.

Old style serif typefaces are indeed superior for blocks of text. San serif types are only good for short fragments such as headers.

I also prefer sans serif on screen; if you're making letters out of pixels, you're better off with cleaner lines. But I agree about blocks of text, absolutely; I have somewhere a book printed entirely in a sans serif font and, though its by one of my favorite essayists, I find it unreadable.

Yup. Screen resolution has quite a ways to catch up with print resolution.
