          • What a strange game.

Mail order refs and, believe it or not, Auld kept Vancouver in it. It could have been much worse.

            • If MacTavish was coach, Auld would've been pulled after 4 goals.

              • He may have let in 7, but he stopped that 8th goal!

                • I think the refs probably salvaged the game though. When Vancouver went to 4, and the refs spoke to both benches. Prolly told Crawford that his team's luck was up and continued running at Hemsky would see them in the box til overtime, and told MacTavish that retaliation would get the Oilers in the same boat.

That lasted til the last two minutes.

                  • Kipper withdraws from the Finnish Olympic team. This pretty much explains his play over the past couple games.

CALGARY (CP) - Finland's Olympic chances took a huge hit Thursday when star goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff of the Calgary Flames withdrew his name from the team.

Kiprusoff has inflammation of the hip and upon advice from doctors will use the period during the Olympics to help heal the injured area.

''It is in the best interest of the Calgary Flames that I use this opportunity to ensure I am totally recovered for the NHL playoff drive,'' Kiprusoff said in a statement. ''I have always been very proud to represent my country in international competition and I'm disappointed that I will not be joining them at the Olympics in Italy.''

Kiprusoff, runner-up for the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's top goalie in 2003-04 when he led the Flames to the Stanley Cup final, gave the Finns arguably some of the best goaltending at the Turin Games along with Canada and the Czech Republic.

He won't be easily replaceable. Rookie Kari Lehtonen of the Atlanta Thrashers and Fredrik Norrena of Sweden's Linkoping were the two other goalies named on the Olympic roster released earlier in Helsinki on Thursday.

Candidates to replace Kiprusoff on the roster include Antero Niittymaki from the Philadephia Flyers, Hannu Toivonen of the Boston Bruins, Jussi Markkanen of the Edmonton Oilers and Vesa Toskala of the San Jose Sharks.

Captain Saku Koivu of the Montreal Canadiens and veteran winger Teemu Selanne of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks were also named to Finland's 23-man team, as well as forwards Jere Lehtinen of the Dallas Stars, Olli Jokinen of the Florida Panthers and Jarkko Ruutu of the Vancouver Canucks.

Tuomu Ruutu, Jarkko's younger brother, was also picked despite the fact the Chicago Blackhawks forward has missed most of the season with back problems.

The 32-year-old Koivu's younger brother, Mikko, a forward for the Minnesota Wild, is also on the roster.

Sami Salo of the Canucks, Aki Berg of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Toni Lydman and Teppo Numminen of the Buffalo Sabres, Joni Pitkanen of the Flyers, Kimmo Timonen of the Nashville Predators and Ossi Vaananen of the Colorado Avalanche round out the blue-line.

                    • Tuomo Ruutu has told media here in Chicago that he is not going to participate in the Olympics.

                      • And Joni Pitkanen is out due to injury.

Sounds like the 'team we'd like to have'.

                        • My team had a great night last night BTW.

Except I played Biron instead of Luongo. DOH!

                              • Poor boo. Tonight's the last night for games this week - no way he can prevent losing three points on the goalie stats.
