I don't think George Allen is a strong candidate. Nothing to be enlightened about.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Ramo, Ramo. The Dems -- who've nominated 3 Catholics an one Greek Orthodox candidate for president, as well one Jew and at least one Catholic for vice president, do have a litmus test: don't be a complete freakin' religious nutjob. The GOP has no such test.

Fair enough. I'm just surprised at how much play he's getting already.

That's only because the field is wide open. Normally, the GOP has an establishment candidate. Not this cycle.

Allen, like Shrub, is able to unite the corporate and social wings of the GOP. The Republican coalition has serious fissures, and few people can really bridge that gap. Incidentally, Allen was also a Governor before his Senate terms (like Evan Bayh).

The only Republican Governor that I think can win the nomination is Haley Barbour (MS). Pawlenty (MN) is also a contender, but he might lose his re-election campaign next year. Huckabee (AR) would be a good candidate for the general, but his tax increases may make him anathema to the Republican base. Sanford (SC) had been mentioned, but from what I've heard he's incredibly inept, and besides took himself out of the running. Pataki (NY) obviously has no shot in hell due to his social views, and I have no idea why anyone takes his bid seriously.

                  Romney

I just read about his mandatory medical insurance plan that would force everyone to get medical insurance. Targeted specifically for young men in their 20's who decided not to get it due to finances or health (i.e. me). Time was heralding it as a third way on medical insurance, but I think its bull****.

An unfunded mandate on the individual level. I am struggling just to pay rent, so I make a rational choice "well I haven't needed a hospital in years, so do I want medical insurance or food?" Tough choice.

I'd be screwed if I was required by law to buy insurance. Its bull****.

That's not the really bizarre thing in Romney's quote. The statement's actually good politics as long as the press doesn't point out that it's patently untrue and ridicule him for saying so (which they probably won't). The second bolded part though - saying that there's no place for religion in politics and government. Does he really expect to win the Republican nomination with that attitude?

Does Warner have any warmth or charisma? I've never heard him address a crowd, so I don't know -- but I do know that, even after Bill, the Dems seem not to understand how important that is. How this keeps escaping the party of FDR and JFK is beyond me...
