What's shameless is accepting official stories without question. What's stupid is not believing the evidence of your own eyes.
I don't know for sure what happened that day, but I do know the government bureaucracies have a nasty habit of outright lying whenever it suits them. CYA is the order of the day. CYA doesn't mean there is a conspiracy, but it does help to create an atomosphere of mistrust amongst the public. I understand some people feel that the government has no reason to lie, but by nature bureaucracies are enormous, ossified and allow no flexibility when it comes to truth. So the story comes out through the official channels with no real chance for any flexibility for changes due to the truth, unless overwhelming evidence comes forward.
