Didn't know we were talking about body counts - well, then Muhammad, Djengis Khan, Pol Pot, Stalin and Hitler has also entered the competition.
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

If you're omniscient, then how can you possibly qualify as a scientific or artistic genius? What would you discover?

The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.

Nelson Mandela would rank pretty high on my list.

Surviving solitary confinement without bitterness and moving from violent struggle to a staunch supporter of harmony and reconcilliation...

                        pretty amazing achievement

Joking aside it's got to be Newton, a polymath. Even though Einstein kicked his arse you can still get a math or physics degree to this day based on Newtons work.

how do you know he's not bitter? It's easy for people to pretend to be something in public life but be entirely different in their personal lives. It's an art politicians have mastered.

I'm not quite sure that qualifies him as the greatest genius in history. Anyways I think Gandhi trumps Mandela in achievement regardless.
