Fortunately, that's no longer the case. Productivity increases trailed off but are coming back robustly. Productivity was 4.7% annualized in Q3, a very high number for this part of the business cycle.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Not necessarily. If half of the new jobs were in the food industry then a large number of those jobs could be part-time work.

      • The US government should be able to figure out how many jobs people have through their sample (perhaps they have already done so). Multiple payroll jobs can be tied to a single person through the Social Security number.

Even illegal aliens are counted through the employer payrolls, since many buy social security numbers that do not scream "illegal alien."

        • Or when they're doing the household surveys they could ask how many jobs does the person have. But don't know if they would be able to get a statistically accurate survey result.

Another thing to note: total number of workers in part time jobs who wanted to work fulltime were at 4 million in Nov 2004 and at 3.8 million today.
