      • If you want something that looks like the Mac Dock, try Stardock's ObjectDock. But its not really useful, just pretty.

If you want something like the Mac Dashboard with widgets, try out Konfabulator. Apple stole it from them, btw. Again, not very useful, but pretty.

Nope. AFAIK Apple invented the idea with the original Macintosh. Back then they were called desktop accessories. They were mini apps that stayed on the desktop and which you could access while using the open application (back in the days before you could have two apps open at once).

I don't agree with them, and I've used all three. Konfabulator widgets were much more like Desk Accessories than Dashboard Widgets.

They were also in NeXTSTEP as well IIRC. Those guys are just whining because Apple did it much better than they did (Konfabulator was sometimes a nightmare on OS X).

If you want someone who really got screwed by Apple, check out Karelia Software. Apple ripped off most of the decent features of their Watson application and integrated them into Sherlock 3. The worst part was that Sherlock 3 sucked compared to Watson.

(Of course, Desktop X predates Konfabulator & Dashboard by years)
