  • LA rocket company maiden launch Friday

This is a big event for a small rocket.

On Friday, SpaceX, an El Segundo, California start-up, is launching its first rocket from the Ronald Reagan Test Site at Omelek in the Marshall Islands. This launch should be of at least modest interest for everyone, since it will be the cheapest ride to space worldwide, including that offered by the Russians on converted ICBMs. By paying less for space launch, we can do more cool stuff in space (and I have a long list...).

From an American patriot's perspective, it's interesting because American innovation in rocketry has almost ceased since the last days of Apollo. SpaceX's rocket has the first new American kerosene booster engines in production since the Saturn V's F1 (developed in the late 1950s). Our rocket companies are getting their heads handed to them from Russian competition, but SpaceX will beat Russia's cheapest on price. Indeed, SpaceX will only charge about 25-30% of what the other US rocket companies charge. SpaceX's rockets are made in the USA.

From a capitalist's perspective, it's interesting because this will be the first successful rocket developed entirely with private funds -- about $100 million in capital -- and is expected to be a profitable proposition. Since the days of von Braun, rocketry was the domain of governments only (the US rocket industry is more communist than what the Soviets dreamed up) and had a multi-billion dollar pricetag. But SpaceX has designed a rocket that is cheap to manufacture, fly, and reuse. This is the best that forward-thinking capitalism has to offer.

    Good luck to SpaceX!

The private launch firm SpaceX will loft its Falcon 1 rocket on Nov. 25, marking the booster’s maiden flight and hopefully the first of many space shots to come, the company’s chief said Friday.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Omelek island... They used to test non-spacefaring rockets here. They ship the rocket from California to the island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean in a standard shipping container.

What are you defining as 'space'? Do they mean LEO? The 'edge of space'?

Can this really match the capabilities of the latest Soyuz capsules?

I'm talking orbit (at least 100 km up going at a speed of at about 7.5 km/s). This one's going to LEO.

This rocket is not as large as the Soyuz rockets. But I note that the Soyuz rockets aren't that big either, as rockets go. The Space Shuttle is huge compared to the Soyuz. SpaceX has plans to scale up their design in the next 3 or 4 years to rockets that are much larger than Soyuz.

          Of course, first things first.

            Good luck!

and no, this doesn't contradict any economical ideology -
I'd be for it if the fricking Nazis would have a space program.

Yes, because we all know how closely interrelated Nazism and American private enterprise are.

Anyway, this sounds exciting, hope everything goes well on Friday.

I believe this is the first recorded godwinization of a space thread.

in any case, no, I don't think that they are interrelated. I was using a hyperbole to illustrate a point.

                  Well, duh.

It works better if it's at least somewhat rooted within the realm of reality you know.

But then again, maybe Dan's mention of von Braun in the OP was what set it off.

Did the company build all the launch facilities, or is it using government ones?

Government launch facilities which they pay to use.

This is great. I usually have a far more conservative estimate on the time it will take to reach most space related goals, but this sort of enterprise is a big step.

Looking at the picture of the launch site leads me to think that a couple more decades of global warming and that island will be underwater. Maybe they should link up with the company that does launches from a converted oil rig?

The launch pad was constructed by the company and logistics were done by the company (as you can see, before the company got there, the only thing on Omelek island was a heliport, a rudimentary dock, and some endangered species ). This is the first orbital rocket to fly from the Reagan Test Site, so the range didn't provide any fuel, etc. However, range safety and radar are done by the range, which is part of the Army.

When the rocket flies from Vandenberg Air Force Base or Cape Canaveral Air Base, there is slightly more support from the range. For instance, I think they will supply you with kerosene and liquid oxygen. But the launch pad is still constructed and maintained by the company.

Each of the company's launch pads cost them about $5 million, which is almost nothing compared to what it costs the company's competitors to construct a launch pad.
