  • Will you ever buy Sony again?

I honestly think that the entire Sony Corporation should be tied to a tree and beat unmercifully for their overreaction to the DRM issue. They should be made an example of. If such a large corporation can be brought down by such carelessness as they have achieved, I think it sends a good message to everyone else. If in 5 years we can all read about Sony getting booted from the stock ticker and closing up shop, I'd certainly feel a certain sense of glee and gratification.

The RIAA's stunts over the past few years have been bad enough already. Sueing small children, strong-arming people into paying high fines, and now supporting Sony in this fiasco is just too much already. Now Sony goes and uses copyrighted code in a program that kills your computer, that's the last straw.

I personnaly will be finding other companies to hand over my entertainment and electronics dollars to.

    Bad Sony articles:

Sony's rootkit infringed copyrights (irony doubles over on itself)
Everyone is sueing Sony ($100,00 per offense!)
    Long Sony thread on boycott-riaa.com
RIAA bull**** (could you get away with this logic anywhere?)
Mother of Five fights back against RIAA

    Sure... I like their TVs.

What can I say Ted, I just hate Sony. =)

I bought CivIV so I've been coming back to ol' Apolyton lately. She's a good place she is!

Sony-BMG is really a rather different entity from Sony electronics. I think not buying any music discs from any labels that belong to the RIAA will net something closer to the intended effect than refusing to buy anything with those four letters on it.

The problem with Sony is that they create a new technology and try to force everyone to use it. This goes all the way back to the days of betamax, when they lost the battle to VHS video tape recordings.

Instead of going with the flow, they fight against it. As was evident with their use of the memory stick a few years ago instead of the industry standard Compact Flash cards.

It's no surprise with their media companies that they are using this same protective approach.

What's sad is that they fail at it every time they try it.

That being said, they still make good tvs and monitors, I even bought one a few weeks ago, the price was awesome and so was the quality.

I've already not been buying music for some time now. Way ahead of you there!

How is Sony-BMG that much different from Sony, though? I mean, somebody from Sony would have had the power to stop the distribution of these rootkits at the door, right?

Sony TV's are fine, but I think I can do without that one decent Sony product in favor of somebody else.

                  This is a good point.

There are about 5 companies within "Sony" itself.

The Sony-BMG company was pretty much an American company that was bought out by Sony.

But the head Sony guys should be putting the smackdown out on their lackeys.

Sony-BMG is just evil enough for 5 companies. Screw Sony.

Of course, there is non-RIAA music to buy out there. Increased indie music sales coupled with falling RIAA figures should give the right kind of signal; if all we see is RIAA's figures plummeting, they can pin it on downloaders and piracy and ask for more draconian legislation.

How is Sony-BMG that much different from Sony, though? I mean, somebody from Sony would have had the power to stop the distribution of these rootkits at the door, right?
Certainly, my understanding is that the different parts of Sony still answer to the same head honchos, whose heads are the ones that should really roll. The electronics division, especially the part that manufactures mp3 players!, must be pulling off its hairs though.

Kass: CD sales rocket after Live 8

See the figures at the bottom of the page. I think that quality music gets the appreciation that it deserves. Unfortunately, last I heard, RIAA profits have gone up on the year, CD music by just a bit, and downloaded music by like 100%.

You're right about the mp3 player guys, that's funny. I didn't even think about that.

Do you know how I can tell if a CD in the store is not backed by the evil RIAA? I haven't even been in the CD section in a while. Is there an RIAA symbol on the case or anything?

I like their electronics products. Provided they continue to make quality products at a decent price I will continue to buy them. My reasoning is similar to Kassi's.
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

It is true that the 5 organizations within Sony pretty much act as independent companies.

That being said, it does make sense for the head honchos to be aware of what's going on with the RIAA stuff.
