You're talking about a man who had to ask Rice whether or not it was ok to discretely dismiss himself to go to the bathroom.
I hate Bush as much as you do, but even I don't think he's that stupid or that he'd be allowed anywhere near The Button if his behaviour were clearly erratic in the WH. They may be in this together, but the WH staff isn't going to idly standby and let him get them killed.
The cake is NOT a lie. It's so delicious and moist.

Oh yeah, what commercial gain is there to be had in this? They aren't printing it in the paper, it's only on their webzine.
The same commerical gain there is to be had from the webzine in the first place.
Seriously though...does this really change the opinions of anyone who dislikes Bush? I mean people always thought he was a drunkard or a dumbass or both.

I wasn't being literal, but just making a point: a looney with as much power as the POTUS would be a very dangerous person.
As a sidenote, it's been pointed out that many on the WH staff are of the evangelical "can't wait for the apocalypse" crowd who might welcome a world-ending holocaust. That's just to keep you up at night.

Which is money generated by advertisers. I'm at a loss as to see how running such a tale--if it is a fabrication, mind you--would, in the long run, be beneficial to them. Especially considering that many of their advertisers would, probably, disapprove of such content (i.e. rightwing book publishers...)

Well, yeah, but that's not really the pertinent question though, is it? The question is, will a rightwing source publishing such unflattering information about the president effect the opinions of those who still like him?
It's probably more indicative of Bush's dwindling support amongst the conservative base than of his actual mental conditions.

That's a good theory. It's possible they are lowering the screens they have built to protect him.
However, as much as I hate Bush, these increasingly frequent reports, are starting to scare me. The man is clearly incompetent, the last thing we need is for his incompetence to go mad on us.

what bothers me is his refusal to talk to the press. This president has had very few press conferences. Esp. compared to Clinton who had them often. Too often actually. But at least we kind of knew what Clinton was thinking (okay maybe not- he was actually thinking about overweight interns)

thanks a lot . I don't need to know Bush has control of nuclear weapons.
But at least he's only likely to use them against countries who can't retaliate. . Sorry middle east.
Well, the latest speeches he's been making, (seems like every week now) about all these groups who are opposed to him, have been escalating, and in an increasingly defensive posture.
We also have Colin Powell's group, I believe, who are now starting to enter into the fray with a leak here and a public scolding there.
I think it's only a matter of time before Powell himself steps up and makes a very significant public appeal. At least I wish he would. I'm just dreaming though. But his crew has been speaking out alot latley about what's been going on.

Maybe this will be our chance to test-drive Section 4 of the 25th Amendment, which heretofore has only been a plot devise in cheesy thrillers:
Amendment XXV
Section 1. In case of the removal of the President from office or of his death or resignation, the Vice President shall become President.
Section 2. Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress.
Section 3. Whenever the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that he is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, and until he transmits to them a written declaration to the contrary, such powers and duties shall be discharged by the Vice President as Acting President.
Section 4. Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.
Thereafter, when the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that no inability exists, he shall resume the powers and duties of his office unless the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive department or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit within four days to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office. Thereupon Congress shall decide the issue, assembling within forty-eight hours for that purpose if not in session. If the Congress, within twenty-one days after receipt of the latter written declaration, or, if Congress is not in session, within twenty-one days after Congress is required to assemble, determines by two-thirds vote of both Houses that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall continue to discharge the same as Acting President; otherwise, the President shall resume the powers and duties of his office.
