The volga germans started to come to south america if I recall correctly, during the last years of the monarchy, because before that time they could not be drafted, they had freedom of religion and many other excemptions, but the tzar cancelled the exemptions, and when commies rose to power it became worse, they would kill the priests for example.

My great grandfather (russian, not volga german) just came because he was extremely wealthy and was afraid of getting killed or losing his fortune.

He bought lots of lands here, but now (at least my side of the family) we dont have any, he had many sons, and he divided the lands equally for all the sons, so they are all just middle class now, my family moved to the city, we are not farmers.

Yeah, my great-grandfathers both draft-dodged the Russo-Japanese War (one was in the Winter Palace guard and very intelligently headed to Finland rather than get sent into the fighting).
