Once again, Galloway is not a very nice character. But this has all the hallmarks of a desperate smear campaign. My guess is they'll just leave this alone from now, rather than risk more embarassment - this is just an effort to plant a seed of suspicion in the minds of credulous right-wingers.

A desperate smear campaign? In a report by a U.N. agency that, according to the AP article I read, slams the U.N. almost just as much as the companies and individuals who corrupted the oil-for-food program in the first place?

I don't think so. That report didn't spare anyone, except Boutros Boutros Ghali (sp).

You think they're going to prosecute Galloway? Read the article carefully; the evidence is still as flimsy as it was before.

A couple of comments and queries...

Firstly, watch out for "guilt by association" vagueness. I can see no connection between George Galloway and Weir Group in the record of interests, so I suspect they're only mentioned here for being Glaswegian.

          Secondly....

But the report listed Mr Galloway under "other political beneficiaries". It said that "over 18 million barrels of oil were allocated either directly in the name of George Galloway... or in the name of one of his associates, Fawaz Abdullah Zureikat... to support Mr Galloway's campaign against the sanctions."
Assuming this is true, this may still have been a pro-active act by the regime that the "recipients" may never have actually received or even been aware of.

          Thirdly....

concluded that thousands of pounds from companies involved in oil deals with Saddam Hussein's regime were paid into the Mariam Appeal which Mr Galloway chaired and which funded his anti-sanctions campaigning.
So what? That's politics. See point 2 above.

Even if the accusations are true, the reason for the blasting of the Senate was it's performance in the debate. You can't redeem them for being completely out-debated by Galloway, no matter what happened.

It wasn't a debate. It was a hearing that took place as a part of an investigation into corruption in the Oil-for-Food program. Galloway was brought to Washington to answer questions about his involvement, but he decided to bluster his way through tirade after tirade rather than answer any of the questions put before him. This may have impressed mouthbreathing supporters of his views, but anyone who knew the purpose of the hearing had to be dubious about Galloway's "pwning" of the Senate. And now it looks like the Senate may have the last laugh.

No news here to anyone who was able to properly read the tea leaves a couple of years ago. Galloway is guilty, and even if he weren't he is a bigot and a traitor and should be put before a firing squad.

Galloway has said he's happy to go to the US and face any perjury charges.

                      I'd love to see that.

It seems to be the same crap wrapped in different paper.

One of the donors to Galloway's charity received money from shady oil deals. This guy has admitted it. He's also said that Galloway didn't know and wasn't involved in the deals himself.

If some of Saddam's dirty money went into a charitable cause, I don't see anything bad about that.

I still see no evidence being presented. I don't see how anyone can say Galloway is guilty based on claims and accusations with no corroborative evidence.

I would love to find Galloway guilty, but I don't see the evidence for it.

                              Update

As for evidence, I suppose one would have to get their hands on a copy of the US Senate's report or the UN Volcker report. Anyone know if there are PDFs online of those two reports?
