Excellent-- Any sense of the viewership?

I'm a bit biased here by my personal view that the BBC does a better job on international news than any US or Canadian broadcast

But why is there any subsidization? Oh and isn't there some national government body that exists only to subsidize the ats

      • I think the BBC reporting is greatly overrated. It's strength is that it just has more international coverage.

As for viewership, I don't know. Probably not bad, but probably not that good either.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Sure, but it's a very modest amount for a country of our size. Don't lose a sense of proportion about this. Canada's subsidies are almost certainly greater than all of the subsidies that the US gives its arts, even though Canada is, as you say 1/10th the size.

          • Here is the last paragraph of a text in support of this I found on Radio Canada International.

The United States disagrees with the text. The US tends to view culture in market terms rather than in terms of cultural diversity. The strong presence of Hollywood films and American television shows is overwhelming in many countries and crowds out local productions. The purpose behind Canada's efforts, and the efforts of other countries, is not to work against Hollywood films but to allow countries an even chance to talk about their own stories on their own airwaves, to show their own films, write their own books, and to exchange their works with other countries rather than having limited options in the world. Judging on the international reaction to Canada's stand on the issue, it appears UNESCO will accept its new definition as part of a new international law to protect cultural diversity.

I did not say that it was right; I just observed that the stupid theory expressed by Odin was apparently adhered to by 147 nations, which means that they adhered to something different, not understood or accepted by the US.

That might be your view but if something is happening in India or China or Africa, its much more likely to at least warrant a story on the BBC whereas the US stations are more likely to be silent on it.

Why do you think the BBC is overrated? Do you find their coverage of the US inadequate ?

Of course, that doesn't answer to the quality of the reporting.

Editor and reporter bias. Opinion in fact pieces, etc.

The different attitude doesn't suprise me. The country with a big military having a differnt view than the one with a small military about the use of militray force is no shocker either. The US has a large and powerful entertainment industry and there is noting apparent in this convention that would be in the U.S. interest and much that would be against it.

Nope it doesn't and I never said it did. But its tough to compare on many major international events that don't even warrant a mention in the US media

ahh-- well compared to the liberal bias on local news of our CBC ( its oh so suprising that the rightist party that might make them smaller gets not very positive press) and the strong bias apparent in networks like FOX, I actually don't find the BBC so terrible.

True-- Are you claiming there should be a higher standard for "news" at a public broadcaster. ??

                            • But I've already told you why their perceptions are incorrect. Why are they disadvantaging their other home-grown industries by setting up barriers to Hollywood?
