Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

I know, it sounds unbelievable, but its what the historians claim. Prior to a minority of "wise" Greeks like Thales, people explained natural phenomena with supernatural entities like gods or spirit. In one of his plays, for example, Aritophanes mocks Socrates because Socrate claims that clouds explain why it rains, not Zeus. Its not that far off, btw. Recently, some devout christians claimed that Katrina was a punishment from God.

What the **** are you talking about? Have you been drinking again? Or is this just another of your arrogant, ill informed and muddleheaded attempts to trash philosophy? I'll repeat : historians, not philosophers, claim that the Greeks introduced naturalistic explanations. No, I'm not trying to muddle the two. The issue is not between proximate and ultimate causes, but between naturalistic explanations and those that are not naturalistic. Sorry, but claiming that God, with Katrina, was out to get the homos isn't a naturalistic explanation. Granted, its not a proximate explanation, but it ain't naturalistic either.

I'm pretty ****ing sure that every normal adult human being in the history of the world has, at some point in their lives, provided a naturalistic explanation for something they've seen happen.
Claiming that the Greeks invented that is just plain retarded.
