Speaking like a true lawyer eh? That's not how it works Imran...there is an option not to pay it - by using public transport. That charge is there for a reason, to discourage people from driving into Central London when there is a perfectly serviceable public transport system...

Um... yes it is. Why pay more when you can pay less? Diplomats are exempt from taxes... why allow yourself to be taxed when you don't have to.

Do (US) diplomats pay tax on the fuel they use to fill their cars?

See above for answer...it's not a tax, it's a charge. Would you be exempt on French autoroutes from paying the toll? I don't think so...

Are you going to even bother answering the questions?

The whole thing is laughable, considering how small the amount of money that would be raised is.

There seems little room to provide a distinction, no matter how many attorneys you put on the case. It's a use tax.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Plus your diplomats also ought to work on their 'diplomacy', they're pretty sh*t at it judging by that story...

Exactly. And an inventive position taken by US diplomats on this.

Imran's point is that if the diplomats are purely selfish bastards (which they seem to be), their actions are completely reasonable.

But what about diplomacy and diplomatic gestures. But let's face it, that hasn't been their strongest point in recent time...

I applaud these diplomats in their observance of a grand American tradition
