DC receives funding from the federal government for municipal services.
Where's this fountain of federal funding of municipal services? I sure haven't seen it.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Speeding tickets, red light violations, and...

      PARKING VIOLATIONS

DC is already 100$ up on me on traffic tickets.

Not a fountain, but doesn't the fed. gov't have direct control and provide direct funding for certain municipal services (I'm thinking of roads in particular)

DC totally assrapes people on parking violations. I knew city services were going to get better when the meter maids were Johnny-on-the-spot in areas outside of downtown.

I think it's delegated to the city govt.

At any rate, If NYC and DC don't whine loud enough to have the US Embassy start behaving nicely again then the UK can simply refund anything London doesn't collect from the money saved. It wouldn't be hard to keep this up for as long as need be...

Honestly it's obnoxious on the part of the embassy but I doubt it's a huge revenue loss on either side of the pond.

No control. And what funding there is for roads from the federal government is in proportion to DC gasoline taxes paid into the highway trust fund, just like the states.

Yeah, but there's no reason to let the US embassy start this bull****.

If two mature, friendly first-world countries can't come to the reasonable conclusion that they shouldn't push the bounds of diplomatic immunity too far with each other then that invites all sorts of future abuses.

Meh. They'll all go away when the UK becomes the 57th state.

                        Hmmm.

I was under the impression that the municipal government of DC often had to beg for money and permission to do certain things which everywhere else were strictly local matters.

                          Permission? Yes. Money? Sometimes.

                            Maybe 51st-60th states.

London by itself is a decent-sized state.

The UK has a population of 60 million. VA has a pop of 7 million. Hm, I guess that works out, though you forgot a number of other states before it (*cough*Canada*cough*).

No begging for money any more (the control board is several years gone), but all spending needs approval by the congress. For instance, even though it was a local issue and local money, the recent renovations to prepare RFK for the Nationals this season had to be approved by the congress with the "emergency" Afghanistan-Iraq funding bill.

If there's a particularly controversial provision with national implications then the congress is more interested and will edit the provisions out. If city officials seem to the congress to be straight shooters, then mostly the congress doesn't bother them because they have better things to do with their time than worry about city services.

The feds do sometimes pay for municipal services directly linked to federal issues. Sometimes there is a sqabble over this kind of money, but that's no big deal. Like police overtime for the IMF/World Bank protests. That sort of thing.
