Did you know that Rehnquist had never been a judge before joining the Supreme Court? In fact, there have been many Justices who were not judges when they were appointed to SCOTUS. It is not unprecedented!

yeah, and Rehnquist was an immoral ideologue who should have never been a judge (let alone a supreme court justice, let alone chief justice)

Back in the 80s, Gore was painting himself as a moderate. He was a Southern Democrat and if you listen to people in Tennessee, they say the Gore they knew as their Senator was FAR different than the one that was Vice President and then Presidential nominee in the 90s.

I think Rehnquist is pretty well respected. I don't think your opinion is shared by many.

On the other hand, Bush does have a habit of rewarding those loyal to him, and that may have taken precedence.
I have to agree with you though I do find it disturbing that he keeps nominating people with little to no record to review. I guess that is the point though; to send up people who can be everything to everyone.

                          Most people are daft.

The Supreme Court are goofs. Professional BSers. Then again, most courts are like that. I suppose it doesn't help their cause that the law is generally stupid.

Harriet Miers is an odd choice. She would not have been my pick. But I can see why Bush picked her. She's from Texas. He knows her from his days as governor and she has shown herself to be a very good lawyer. Furthermore, she was on the team to help select the next nominee. Remembering what happened with Cheney, Bush seems to like to pick the person in charge of finding a nominee to be the nominee themselves.

Considering the ever increasing visciousness of the confirmation hearings, this may be the best method.
All the other female candidates he floated have been roasted already and the Dems were licking their chops in anticipation. This will make it tougher on them. Especially if there is any truth that she has been previously discussed with them and submitted as a compromise candidate.

But I too worry if this sets precedence for submitting candidates without a lot of judicial experience so there's no food for the vultures.

anyone who respects Rehnquist is a moron

I won't go into detail, but in the Rehnquist thread (a few weeks ago), I posted an article from the Chicago Tribune (a slightly conservative leaning paper... not in their stories... just their editorials), they studied Rehnquist's decisions in Free Speech cases...

Rehnquist could only be described as an enemy of Free Speech... his decisions always favored corporations, churches and rich political candidates... and he never once (not one time in all the first amendment cases that came before the Supreme court) supported an individual when it came to a situation involving the first amendment.
