  • And The Next Nominee for SCOTUS Is...

    Harriet Miers

    Whoever that is.

President Bush on Monday nominated White House counsel Harriet Miers to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court, reaching into his loyal inner circle for a pick that could reshape the nation's judiciary for years to come.

"She has devoted her life to the rule of law and the cause of justice," Bush said, announcing his choice from the Oval Office with Miers at his side. "She will be an outstanding addition to the Supreme Court of the United States."

If confirmed by the Republican-controlled Senate, Miers, 60, would join Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg as the second woman on the nation's highest court and the third to serve there. Miers, who has never been a judge, was the first woman to serve as president of the Texas State Bar and the Dallas Bar Association.
A somewhat out of date bio:

President Bush on November 17 named Harriet Miers as White House counsel, a position she will hold upon the Senate confirmation of Alberto Gonzales -- current White House counsel -- as U.S. Attorney General.

Most recently, Miers served as Assistant to the President and Staff Secretary. Prior to that, she was Co-Managing Partner at Locke Liddell & Sapp, LLP. Previously, she was President of Locke, Purnell, Rain & Harrell, where she worked from 1972 until 1999. From 1995 until 2000, she was chair of the Texas Lottery Commission. In 1992, Harriet became the first woman president of the Texas State Bar, and in 1985 she became the first woman president of the Dallas Bar Association. She also served as a Member-At-Large on the Dallas City Council. Harriet received both her undergraduate and law degrees from Southern Methodist University.

I can't say I'm impressed with this choice. One bit.

well it certainly follows the pattern of unqualified people...

Roberts was a judge for 2 years and Bush makes him Chief Justice nominee...

this one has never been a judge...

are these people (Roberts, this lady) worse than Michael Brown as FEMA head?

tough call... as FEMA head, many peoples' lives directly are affected by Brown... but then again, our nation's history could be significantly affected by these two douchebags...
To us, it is the BEAST.

She's an interesting choice. By not appointing someone like Priscilla Owen, Bush demonstrates that he is worried that an ultra-conservative might not make it past a filibuster. On the other hand, Bush does have a habit of rewarding those loyal to him, and that may have taken precedence.

I think she'll pass, because she does not have a history as a judge, and hence won't have controversial opinions on record. They'll try to pull a Roberts, and the only weapon against her is that she has no experience as a judge. Democrats might filibuster anyways, but the moderate Democrats would probably vote for cloture, and if they didn't, moderate Republicans would probably lean towards the Nuclear Option.

So I'm hoping they discover her eating babies.

Miers has been leading the White House effort to help Bush choose nominees to the Supreme Court, so getting the nod herself duplicates a move that Bush made in 2000 when he tapped the man leading his search committee for a vice presidential running mate Dick Cheney.

"eugh, no sir, quick learner though"
              "none, whatsoever?"
              "no sir"
"Get out then and stop wasting my time, dammit!!!"

"Hi, so, what's your experience as a judge?"
"Judge??? None....I did work for the lottery though!!"
"Ah, interesting. In that case, how does supreme court justice sound...?"

Democrats should be pleased. She doesn't look like she's young, tan, and ready to be a justice for the next 50 years like Roberts does.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. Apparently conservatives are pissed. It seems that Bush negotiated with the Dems on this pick.

                        Just what I've heard though.

Considering the fact that she has contributed to Democratic candidates in the past, I should say so. Conservatives should be concerned though.

This was a bad pick all the way around. Dems get to bash Bush for Cronyism whilst Bush's base will cry foul that she isn't conservative.

                              Not a smart move.
