    • Depends where in the country you are and how cold it is. In the countryside/up north it'll stay. In southern towns it rarely settles.

We don't write Hengelo phoenetically because it's too much work But yeah, they're practically the same city, seperated only by a golf course, a university, a football stadium (FC Twente forever!) and an airport.

And is it true that Enschede means plus kut?
Now who gave you that idea? Enschede doesn't mean anything, it's a strong bastardisation of Enske, the name of the city in Twents, the local dialect here. If memory serves me, Enske is Old Twents for a 'valley' between essen, where an es is an artificial hill created by fertilising farmland year after year for a few millennia. So I, who live in a part of Hengelo called the Hasseler Es, am literally living on top of a pile of sh*t

              • mrG told me but his dutch is worse than his English.

He told me that en was plus/and (which I knew) and schede meant kut?

Since then I've done some research and found out that schede means sleeve? So I guess it's potentially also slang for kut in some places? Wizards sleeve is slang here for... well a big wide one.

                • Well, yes, if you put it that way, it does mean "plus kut".

However, the primary meaning of "schede" is, wie sage ich das jetzt, the thing in which someone puts (the blade of) his sword.

                  • Sheath?

In English that's also slang for condom.

                    • Anyway if it means "thing in which man puts the blade of his sword" you can see where the innuendo comes from? I guess this is an insight into how mrG's mind works. It's good that he's my teacher in all Dutch things?

                      • Ahhhh.... like that. Well that's just very very wrong

True, En == and, but the second syllable of schede in Enschede is stressed, while for the word schede on its own the first one is. I've lived here all my life and never made that association (though of course in my mind the city's called Enske, not Enschede). That's a bit like saying Cambridge contains the word ridge. It's true but I don't think anyone normally makes that association.

And on its own schede means sheath. It's very occasionally used to mean vagina as well, but not by anyone under 50

I´ll come around after 4. If some of you are planning to venture into the Jaarbeurs you can probably find me somewhere around usergroups area (either the UNIX GG or the 8-bit computer part, most probably the Commodore GG section).
Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.

Well, that's the big question, isn't it? There will be no public transport of any kind for the rest of the day and it's still uncertain when it will be restored, so I may well be unable to leave town tomorrow. I also see on the NS website that it's strongly recommended not to travel to Utrecht. I'll keep you informed, but if I'm coming at all I'll likely be late.
