Why not a united North America? The question you should be asking is, why consider a united North America at all? Balkanization is the natural form of nations. Nations like to stay independent rather than unify.

Vomitus, please, no generalisations. There has been reasoning above which answered your question: "same language, same culture", and that's the point to start. The Balkans have many different peoples and cultures and can't be compared with North America. Or why did East Germany join with the west? Why does Austria not?

The USA has given an example on how to integrate many different nations and cultures. Now they have to find a way to continue, having gone down the wrong way for several decades. USA c19 USA c20 USA c21

Why didn't you conquer them? Because they were still stronger.

Linguistically, one way people in Latin America refer to the gringos is as Norteamericano, "North Americans", since obviously, people in Latin America are Americans also. Its easier than saying Estadunidense (someone from the United States). I have yet to see anyone apply that to Canadians thought...

Re: Why did a united North America not form?

Because Britain defeated our invasion of Canada and we defeated the British invasion of us. But we were partially occupied and they were the most powerful empire on the planet, so the fact that we stayed independent and drove them out of our territory means we won.

The US didn't become the big swinging dick until about 1880 or so. Before that, it was the Brits, so I hardly blame Canadians for throwing in their lots with the Brits.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I think at some point we're going to see a free-er movement of labo(u)r across the US/Canada border, which would be nice.

We already have integrated defen(s/c)e. Beyond that, I don't think it matters enough to anyone to really push for full scale union.
