        Rookie Alex Ovechkin got a hat trick vs the Penguins tonight.

        Ovechkin, the first player selected in the 2004 NHL draft, scored an unassisted short-handed goal that gave the Capitals a 3-2 lead early in the third period. Sidney Crosby, the first overall pick in 2005 by the Penguins, did not play.

        Ovechkin's third goal of the game and the pre-season gave the Capitals a 4-2 lead at 12:45 of the third period. Ovechkin's first goal pulled the Capitals within 2-1 at 5:20 of the second period.

        Jeff Halpern deflected a shot by Ovechkin into the net for a 2-2 tie with 1:25 remaining in the second. Lasse Pirjeta's second goal of the pre-season capped Pittsburgh's scoring with 2:34 remaining.

          Is everyone having fun yet?

          Sava - I suggested the reduction from 4D because that would have meant 48 D picks, which would have led to us all scrabbling for picks like Dion Phaneuf, instead of just Asher.

          Imran - to enjoying picking the sleepers. There have been many true gems that everyone picking solely on 2003/2004 stats overlooked.

          Here's something that I find quite interesting - the average ages of picks to date:

            Thrashers general manager Don Waddell said he had "good dialogue" on Friday with the agent for Ilya Kovalchuk.
            Waddell said he and Jay Grossman did not make any progress on closing the salary gap between the two sides, but discussed different alternatives in terms of contract length. The parties have been about $6.5 million apart on a five-year deal. Waddell said both sides have been "very professional" and "That's the only way to come to an agreement." Kovalchuk is due to arrive in New York early next week. Stay tuned.

              I'd say if you were picking based on '03/'04 stats, you might be in trouble. I think Yahoo's rankings were just about the worst projections out there. I guess we'll have to see how it plays out.

                  Yahoo makes doesn't really attempt projections - they provide purely historical rankings. Until the start of the season, the default "Rank" order is "03-04 Season (total)". "O-Rank" has a bias favouring older players.

                      Because people are impatient .

                      Sava needed to make a deal now because of his mistake on the number of defensemen. If he waited, people may have been unwilling to deal.

                              I am dissappointed that I missed this, the price I pay for avoiding Off Topic like the plague.

                              I haven't been this excited about the start of a hockey season in a few years. I realize it is too late to join up now, but where would I follow this draft once the season has started? (I hope to join the playoff or at least next seasons and I assume that will be the place to watch in order to not miss out again)
