It could of course be a problem that the official at site was Maj. Ed Bush - it may have diminished his credibility .

You asked why were there so many rumors in the news.

I responded that there was a media blackout on the ground since FEMA said reporters weren't allowed & because reporters couldn't get on the ground coverage they published the only thing they could, rumors.

To which you responded with the generic & idiotic "OMG! Why do you hate America/Freedom/Bush (circle one) so much?"

Good job Dan. Way to advance the debate.

So in your considered opinion the media blackout had nothing to do with the media not being able to go get on the ground coverage?

The problem was the on the ground coverage, Oerdin. Hell I can't really blame them too much though with the idiot NO mayor spouting the same sort of crap back at them.

So what was the problem if it wasn't a lack of on the ground coverage? It would seem like the best way to dispell rumors is to get factual first hand information.

They were too busy subjecting us to their emotional reactions to the situation.

I think that the journalists are a little excused since both the NO mayor and chief of police told the same unverified rumors wich gave them a kind of official mark. There is a difference between stating that a rumor is a fact and that the information is unverified.

My real problem is actually with the arrogance of journalists. They seems to think that they always have the right to go as it suits them - just like when there f.ex. is a car accident - people gathers around, not to help, but to take pics with their cellphones and the get pissed if the rescue crews ask them to move. Several times here (denmark) rescue teams has called for police to control such crowds. It's quite sick.

And God bless them for diong that considered nobody was helping the people there at the time.

That's what the media is for.

Interrogate what was coming out of the news media and I think you'll find very little information even as to the squalid conditions. Like when did it start, what was the magnitude of the squalor, when did the lights go out in the Superdome for good, did the National Guard have control of the situation at the Superdome, when did the food and water run out, etc.

We can infer lots of stuff, such as the Superdome must have run out of diesel on date X, therefore the lights went out. Or the toilets must have been backing up starting on date Y, because sewage was no longer being pumped by the city. But there was no reporting inside the Superdome to confirm any of this and the city government didn't even know the details to back up our inferences.

The very existance of such outlandish rumours points out that the situation indeed was very bad. There were fertile grounds for them.
It doesn't indicate anything of the sort. It only indicates that there was a vacuum of information.

This is a problem, because we're going to be spending $200 billion or whatever due to political facts that were established on mass falsehoods of rumors and lies. All future emergency responses will be impacted by the political facts established on these mass falsehoods.

Even white suburban inordinate fear of blacks is reinforced by these falsehoods that were established as fact. The impact is wide-ranging and altogether negative!

Well, just remember that this is all to blame on Bush. There is no reason to say that any journalists are to blame for promoting any kind of racial hate.

I'd rather spend $200 billion on rebuilding the U.S. than on enriching corporations in the name of rebuilding Iraq.
