IIRC, they have become much more stable the last decade. Berlusconi has already been here for several years, and I think the previous one (d'Alema? ) also stayed in place for a significant time.

Berlusconi's cabinet has had a certain musical chairs quality to it, tho.

I actually made a thread about this on l'Event, so I can't be entirely apathetic wrt Italy.

Curiously enough this isn't actually anything to do with Italy's budget deficit. There was an article in a newspaper here last Sunday about this because it involves EU competition rules and the Commissioner concerned is Irish. The EU Commission is after various countries, particularly France, for happily allowing their companies to buy companies in other EU countries but blocking takeover attempts the other way.

Mr Fazio is at the centre of a controversy over his role in the struggle for control of Banca Antonveneta, which pitted Italy's Banca Popolare Italiana against ABN Amro.

The central bank approved Banca Popolare Italiana's takeover offer for its Italian rival.

However, details of leaked conversations revealed that Mr Fazio tipped off Banca Popolare's boss about the Bank of Italy's decision to clear the bid.

On Thursday, Mr Berlusconi added his voice to the chorus of Italian politicians calling for Mr Fazio to resign, saying his presence was "not compatible with national credibility".

His intervention followed concern that the Bank of Italy's international standing had been damaged by the allegations of bias in its handling of the takeover battle.

ABN Amro is a Dutch bank.

Yes, Mr. Fazio has almost single handedly trashed Italian Central Banks reputation among other central bankers and others.

At the time Berlusconi was backing him strongly partly in order to see ICBs soveigrenity and credibility weakening. Now they have apparantly got into some disagreement and Berlusconi is stabbing him in the back.

I guess absolute power does corrupt afterall....

                Well that's a relief.

Well, the economy doesn't appear to be doing too great either, does it? FIAT is limping on cash injectments, Parmalat crashed down in fraud, the backbone of its economy lies wihin sectors in which China has a competetive edge and its presence in the "new economy" is anemic.

5% is that bad if it's done several years in a row during no-growth periods.

Before the hurricanes, the US was running at a 3.4% deficit (all levels, consolidated), with economic growth at 5.7% nominal.

Thing about Bereta_Eder (change back your nick already, you pattycake! ) is, he lives in one of the only EU countries that are even more messed up than Italy, so his standards are a bit warped.

I will make it even more clear: economy (or the capital if you prefer) has learned to live without being influenced by the rapid political changes that take place in Italy. Strikes in the metro are unrelated with that. Oh and spare me your little sermont there last comformist about your "advanced" masturbating countries
