          No.
Arguably yes. Why? Because almost everything pushes a point of some description.

Rainforest soils are piss-poor for farming, really. They are horribly leached of minerals and there is pretty much no true humus layer because the organic material is decomposed by microbes at an incredibly rapid rate because of the heat and humidity all year long.

What does a stupid post-modernist sound bite have to do with this thread?

Cutting down the amazonian rain forest is no doubt bad economics in the grand scheme of things, but it's hardly a threat to the future of the human species.
Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

I think it was concensus that while it was a major source of oxygen, for the territory with the same size, the amount of CO2 reduction/O2 production would be larger with young, replanable crop woods. It's the lost biodiversity that troubles me.

That doesn't seem to be the point.

The point is we should have a different perspective on things, and economic activity should not be the only deciding factor.

I had a good time in a Biology class, our teacher had, by craft or chance placed 2 posters next to each other. one claimed that 75% of air came from the rain forests, the other claimed that the remaining 50% came from plankton. and apparently no one noticed it before that.

Except that soil isn't good for growing anything that isn't already there. Once the land is slashed and burned, it degrades very quickly and becomes desert-like in its in-ablity to grow much of anything. If you want to start a tropical tree farm, you have to do it with the jungle still intact.
