the public schols where I live are excellent. We put POTM in a jewish day school for religious reasons, if you can imagine that. When she left Jewish day school we put her in public school. Ive also been a substitute teacher in public school.

You're about a million miles off here. I wasn't even thinking about Iraq. I was actually thinking about stuff like amendments against flag burning (no matter that they don't pass; it's the amount of support they do manage to garner that frightens me).

I can tell you that the social studies education that POTM received both at jewish day school, and at preschool, encouraged debate and questioning. Not cultish at all. And she even has enough skepticism not to judge say, an entire educational system, based on a brief morning ceremony. A skepticism, and humility of judgement, I find strangely lacking in people who come from "environments" that theoretically encourage healthy skepicism.

A brief morning ceremony that's repeated every day shouldn't be so lightly dismissed.

Why should it bother you? I dont agree with it, but it wont change the political situation in the US - it wouldnt be a substantial abridgement of freedom of speech. Your solicitious concern for freedom of speech DOES remind me of a time a few years back when i worked for a consulting firm, and a friend from the Toronto office asked me for copies of the WaPo cause he was trying to follow a criminal trial in Canada that was under gag order, and the internet sites for the US papers didnt have pictures.

The public schools where I'm from share all funding across the entire province...

So until you can tell me that you'd be as happy to send your kids to school in Baltimore as you would be to send them to a Montgomery County (? 3rd richest county in the US IIRC) public school you're comparing apples and oranges.

I know 3 public school teachers in Baltimore, by the way. You should hear the **** they have to put up with when it comes to run-down facilities, inadequate books etc.

O'Malley just got started tearing down the mobile classroom units in the city. Could you imagine sending your kid to school in a trailer?

Gag orders are there because freedom of speech must be weighed against the defendant's right to a fair trial. When the defendant has received his trial the gag orders are lifted.

Simple solution and of course this is coming from a smart ass Why dont we just agree to change the word god to the term myself since the world now days is made up of the tendency to be self centered and most are concerned for only them selves. Works pretty good "one nation under myself" yada yada ya

Fairfax has school rooms in trailers. The Jewish day school POTM went to had school rooms in a building that was little more than a trailer. Its no biggie, and is usually caused by overcrowding.

And yes, I have friends who sent their kids to public school in Baltimore City, esp in Mt Washington. They emerged none the worse for wear, as we say.

In any case vouchers could save the public schools money.
