  • Bush is the root of all evil - Part 2

    And here's the proof!

In Katrina's wake, Louisiana politicians and other critics have complained about paltry funding for the Army Corps in general and Louisiana projects in particular. But over the five years of President Bush's administration, Louisiana has received far more money for Corps civil works projects than any other state, about $1.9 billion; California was a distant second with less than $1.4 billion, even though its population is more than seven times as large.

Much of that Louisiana money was spent to try to keep low-lying New Orleans dry. But hundreds of millions of dollars have gone to unrelated water projects demanded by the state's congressional delegation and approved by the Corps, often after economic analyses that turned out to be inaccurate. Despite a series of independent investigations criticizing Army Corps construction projects as wasteful pork-barrel spending, Louisiana's representatives have kept bringing home the bacon. . . .

Pam Dashiell, president of the Holy Cross Neighborhood Association, remembers holding a protest against the lock four years ago -- right where the levee broke Aug. 30. Now she's holed up with her family in a St. Louis hotel, and her neighborhood is underwater. "Our politicians never cared half as much about protecting us as they cared about pork," Dashiell said.

New Orleans could have been saved if only Bush hadn't cut the funding for levees!

The best part is, the levees that broke were not even scheduled to be strenghtened when they thought they had the money.

      Absolutely all Bush's fault.

How much money was wasted in the highway bill again?

How about that bridge to nowhere in Alaska?

But yet they couldn't fix a levee to protect over a million people?
To us, it is the BEAST.

Well he is a master engineer after all, Drake. He could have single handedly fixed it.

I like that we now have four threads discussing the same thing, even the same sub-topic of the same thing.

But yet they couldn't fix a levee to protect over a million people?
Fix, there was nothing wrong with it. It worked to the exact tolerances it was designed for.

Exactly, but that doesn't make me that angry. What really pisses me off is that Bush is in Washington right now, focusing on some bull**** like Iraq and the Supreme Court when he should be in New Orleans vaporizing the flood waters with his heat vision.

Shame on you, Mr. Bush. Shame on you...

No, it'd didn't. It was supposed to stand up to a fast Cat 3. It didn't. Katie was a 4 where it made landfall but was only a Cat 2 in NOLA, and a Cat 3 in Biloxi. Now there are certain geographical features that may have magnified the impact of the storm in Lake Ponchetrain, but we don't know yet, whether those were in play.

Change the subject when you are wrong?

Bush didn't f'up, the Louisianna state government did. They had plenty of money, they just didn't know what to do with it.

I sooner blame the Army Core of Engineers... I am ashamed to call myself an engineer when there are idiots like them running around building damns, redirecting rivers, and pretty much encouraging floods.

In all seriousness, why do we need a scapegoat? Why can't we just admit that many people on many different levels made mistakes that led to the regrettable events in New Orleans? Why do we have to turn a national tragedy into an exercise in finger-pointing?
