Hey, Sava: sorry to tell you this, but the difficulties inherent in bilingualism are a lot tougher than are the difficulties inherent in people having different skin colours.

Don't blame me because we've handled our multiculturalism better than you've handled yours.

yeah "lingualism" is a much stronger force of hatred than racism

I remember reading about the language riots in Canada during the 60's... Rosa Parques refusing to give up her seat on the bus for an English speaking passenger. And that riveting speech Martin St. Louis King Jr. gave in Ottawa... "J'ai un rêve"

            not blaming you for anything...

I just think it's stupid to pretend that a bunch of white people living together in a country (with a twist of French) is diversity.

            Silly me.

So you're saying the European Union has no diversity?

You obviously have no clue of what it's taken to make this country work. Two people who can communicate freely should be able to work out their differences. A difference in language makes that ten times harder.

The problem is that intolerance is so strong in your country that a difference in skin tone is still haunting you.

It's not diversity that's the problem. Canada is a more diverse country than the US is. It's intolerance, hatred and racism. They magnify the differences until you think that diversity is about skin tone. The funniest thing is that black and white culture in the US are almost indistinguishable.

                    3-1 or so.

And I lived in the province where it was 9-1 in favour of the French (to be fair, in the city where it's more like 2-1 in the favour of the French)

You wouldn't know diversity if it bit you in the ass.

If the US had had to deal with a language divide instead of merely a racial divide then it would have exploded ages ago.

The BNA act would never have flown. You would have been busy herding the French into ghettoes from the word 'go'...

Canada is quite diverse actually (the cities anyway...). I meet far more "ethnics" on a dialy basis than french canadians.

I'm just saying that diversity doesn't necessarily entail a difference in skin color.

yes, considering I lived in a household that spoke 3 languages... and my circle of my friends I'm one of two white guys (and there's only 1 WASP among us)... it also resembles the UN... just off the top of my head, between my group of friends, we speak at least 14 languages. We are of the following ethnic backgrounds: Serbian (me), Chinese, Japanese, Indian (Asia, not American), Pakistani, Syrian, Vietnamese, Philipino, Mexican, Puerto Rican, African American, and one average white kid.

I know the Frenchies in your country can't get along with the rest of the Canadians, but it is not even in the same ballpark when it comes to comparing the struggles of racism in America.

As Samuel L. Jackson put... it ain't no ballpark... it ain't even the same sport!

I think you got it backwards. KH and I disagree all the time but he's absolutely right on this one.

Sava, Canada accepts twice as many immigrants per capita per annum as the US does. Our foreign-born population is 50% larger than yours per capita. Plus we encourage multiculturalism instead of a melting pot.

But yeah, play the blind man.
