If this tragedy doesn't change your "outlook," then you have far big problems than I can help you with.

How many more bad examples do you need?

          Roberts for Chief Justice?

Is this some kind of joke?

The guy has 2 YEARS EXPERIENCE as a judge...

2 years... and Bush wants to make him Chief Justice.

Judging from Bush's choice for the head of FEMA, it's not surprising.

          When will this nightmare end?

What are the requirements for the job?

Imran would be better able to answer that than I. I would assume being judged well qualified by the American Bar Association would be a good place to start though.

                  • I'm assuming the Congress created some requirements for who may or may not be nominated. I would hate to think it was all ad hoc.

                    • Bush has shown his excellent leadership abilities by making this swift move.

There has been no opposition voiced by Democrats to Roberts in the 7 weeks since his nomination for the associate position. So they'll have a hard time going on a campaign against this latest development in the time before the confirmation hearing before the Senate, which we'll probably see within the next 2 weeks. Roberts is as good as secured for this position. And O'Connor will stay on until her replacement is ready, so the SCOTUS will not have to face an 8-justice situation when they reconvene early next month. Plus when you have the rare chance of appointing a Chief Justice, picking a person of age 50 for the lifelong position is likely to bring nearly optimal influence on the Court.

                      • Scalia would have been a better choice for them, though.

                        • I actually think William Rehnquist himself has had a strong hand in all of this.

There are no specific requirements as to who may or may not serve on SCOTUS. If Senate confirms the person, they are made a justice. I don't even know if they have to have a law degree (though I doubt that the Senate would accept a nominee that had no legal background whatsoever)

BTW, Earl Warren was made C.J. without ever having served on SCOTUS. Making Roberts CJ wouldn't be unprecedented (but it probably will P.O. Scalia). Earl Warren was governor of California when appointed C.J. of SCOTUS. He was the AG or CA before becoming Governor, but had never been a judge prior to becoming C.J. of SCOTUS.

Actually the majority of chief justices were never regular supreme court justices first. I think I heard 10 out of 16 were first appointed to be CJ. Or somehting like that. Its the clear majority of cases. Rehnquist, being elevated from regular justice to CJ was in the minority.
