The General manager/coach thing is either split into Director of Football/Coach or one man does both jobs. It's quite a new idea to seperate the jobs and "the jury is still out" as they say.

Benetiz (Liverpool) has proved he can win in Europe with two different unfancied teams.....

    • Yep. I would definitely consider him. Although Valencia and Liverpool both had decent transfer budgets etc.

      • I did not intend "adequate" to mean inexpensive so much as "not exorbitant", so I would consider anybody short of Chelsea (and maybe ManU, Real Madrid, Barcelona?) as having "adequate" budgets.

        • Over the last 3 or 4 years the two coaches who have proved they can do it on a 'non exorbitant' budget are Morinho (pre Chelsea) and Benetez.

          • I think that, Liverpool can get 2nd or 3rd this season. Their league position is deceptive 'cause of the games in hand.

Ah, first the saviour of the English national team and now a CL manager on a budget!

All on the back of getting Bolton into the UEFA Cup in a very weird Premiership season.

Couldn't have happened to a more interesting pair of teams. I missed the game because of a band rehearsal, where we were able to predict the result. Our guitarist (a Villa fan) was at the Bridge on Saturday - in the Chelsea seats. Funny how the best team in Europe can't sell it's own tickets. The Riverside used to be the place for that.

Wrong Arsenal. Shouldn't you be getting back to your tardis? It's seventy years since Herbert Chapman and ten years even since GG was in charge.

What makes me laugh is that until last summer the criteria for being a 'great side' was either defending the PL or winning the CL. So the Arse could never qualify, as merely entertaining millions of neutrals and winning trophies every year never came into it. Fair enough, if those are the rules. Except that since a self-evidently very ordinary side won the CL, that criterion has now been dropped, and defending the prem is now the yardstick. Until boring, boring, Chelsea do it in 05/06, then perhaps everyone will admit that a truly great side ... entertains.

We were too busy writing songs to go looking for a bookies during valuable rehearsal time, but I doubt they would have given generous odds on that result somehow. Calling a 0-0 with 2 rejected pen shouts might have been good though.

                            • I'd guess 0-0 would have been around 3-1,4-1 much better than putting the money in a bank overnight....:O)

So how many songs did you write last night? You must be a very fecund group to pass up that easy money?

                              • That high? I doubt it - I'd expect more like 7/4. Anyway, we're not big on gambling, tbh, but we made good progress on 3 new songs, and worked on the live set to enhance the odds of putting on a good show at the Bull & Gate, Kentish Town, London on Friday 21st October.
